Carbon monoxide present in pregnancy - anyone else experienced this?

I went for my first midwife app today and blew a 6 on the carbon monoxide thing which she said would have to be monitored if it doesn't get better. My scan in Thursday, I had an early scan at 8+ and I'm now 11+6, everything was totally fine at my last one but I had a mmc in October so am nervous about scans anyway! Has anyone else had this? Was your baby okay?

I had a high reading with DC3, I don't smoke (no one in the family does) and have a carbon monoxide monitor by the boiler. I put it down to walking through a crowd of smokers on the way into hospital.

Is your boiler definitely okay? That's what they were most concerned about with me but my next reading was normal.

I had this, a reading of 14 or something ridiculous. We had the boiler checked, it was fine. Either fumes from driving there on a busy road with windows open or faulty machine. Midwife got a new machine in the end. Baby was fine. But it was worrying! Hope you're not too worried.

Mine read 7 the other day.
The midwife said she had noticed it in people who are wearing masks that had been sat in their cars.
No idea if she's onto something but I'll take a new mask with me next time and see if it makes a difference

I've not long moved into my property so I had my boiler checked very recently which is apparently fine.. I was wondering how long is stays in your blood and it sounds like not long if some of you were told it could be something you passed through on your way? She said it can be diffusers and I got a new oil diffused for Christmas so I'm going to stop using that. Thanks tho, I did the worst thing and obvs googled it and got myself panicking 😭 but it sounds like it's perhaps not as severe as I'd got in my head.. the more positive experiences I can read the better 😅

I've never had this test done, is this common in England for pregnant women?

jytdtysrht · 31/01/2022 21:18

My friend had it, the carbon monoxide was from something faulty in her car. Her baby was ok.

PinkPlantCase · 31/01/2022 21:19

Also never had this test done!

20week · 31/01/2022 21:20

I'v only had it done in England, wasn't a thing in Wales.

Rno3gfr · 31/01/2022 21:24

I’ve had it done in Wales. I was accused of smoking because it read 5. The midwife then accused my non-smoking dp of smoking around me. I’ve only ever socially smoked, certainly not while pregnant. I had to convince the midwife otherwise. Why do they do these tests?

ofwarren · 31/01/2022 21:26

My midwife said it could be from living on a busy main road or having to walk down one frequently.

jokerflowers · 31/01/2022 21:38

I'm sure it's new, I don't think I had it done with my other 2 children (5&7) this is the first time I've had to do one, other than with the mmc

Yes, I was made to feel like I'd smoked and it really took the shine off our first midwife visit and we both came home googling the things that might be wrong. I was so worried, I telephoned the midwife and returned the very next morning to be retested as I was unable to relax.

Dani7 · 01/02/2022 09:05

I got a reading of 10 at my 10 week booking in appointment! Never smoked in my life, brand new car, had been at work all day. Have checked our carbon monoxide monitor at home and all good.
I think there are 3 possibilities for mine and maybe a combination of all 3:

  • I’d been wearing a mask constantly all day as husband and 2yo had just tested Covid positive
  • I tested positive for Covid the next day
  • I had cheese for lunch! Sounds mad but MW said if you are lactose intolerant, eating cheese before the test can give a high reading. As far as I know, I’m not lactose intolerant but this has been a reoccurring issue/question come up in previous pregnancy and with DS so there is possibly something to it…

Also could have been a faulty monitor.

Anyway, I was retested at my 12 week scan (after Covid and avoided cheese 😅) and it recorded 2. So just an issue with work boiler or lactose intolerant to rule out now 🙈

Mine also showed up as a bit high, and she was asking lots of questions about smoking (I don't). She then asked if I had a log burner, which I do! Apparently they're seeing this a lot as log burners are getting more common.

I’m late to this thread but I had similar. My midwife said she had noticed higher levels in pregnant women while wearing masks. I looked into it and there is evidence that masks increase CO2 a bit particularly during pregnancy though not usually dangerously so. I couldn’t think of an alternative explanation in my case as I checked likely sources like boiler etc.
