Fetal echo

Hi all!

I know google exists (so I do apologise if this question is stupid) but it’s not giving me a straightforward answer.

I’m currently 14.5 weeks pregnant and just been given my NIPT result which came back low risk after a 1/26 chance of Down syndrome and 3.6mm NT measurement at 12 weeks. I’m really happy about this but I’ve read on other threads that some women have had a fetal echo appointment to check the heart after a worrying 12 week scan.

My question is, what is this and what does it do?

Thanks so much xx

A fetal echo is to look at the structure of the baby’s heart. An NT of up to 3.5mm is considered “normal”. An increased NT may just be normal variation and completely normal for your baby, or related to chromosomal issues , or related to a structural heart issue. The NIPT has addressed the chromosomal issues.
In England it would be normal practice to offer you a fetal echo for reassurance. At the mid pregnancy scan the heart structure will be reviewed, but an echo is an additional expert detailed review.
