Just wondering if anyone can help me, I'm almost 5 weeks pregnant, currently taking progesterone twice daily, I have had miscarriages previously and I was just wondering if anyone could let me know how they got early reassurance scans via the NHS? I'm just so worried I have another miscarriage

Unless you are bleeding or have a history of ectopics you cant really get reassurance scans on the NHS and not less than 6 weeks or some 7-8 weeks. Are you a patient of a recurrent miscarriage clinic? They might arrange a scan? I found them next to useless though x

When I spoke to my dr last week he said he was going to put me on the system but heard nothing more after this, he has prescribed me progesterone and wants me to take it till I'm 16 weeks

We were able to get early scans on NHS after having multiple miscarriages, after 2 miscarriages they said they would scan me at 8 weeks if got pregnant again, which I did and they did but baby died at 9 and half weeks, then with my son they scanned me at 7 weeks and 9 weeks- this current pregnancy they have scanned me at 6 weeks and this week I have another scan when I'll be 8 weeks and they should do another at 10 weeks to see me through to the 12 week scan

Could be worth asking for your GP to refer you?

Thank you I will give him a ring tomorrow and see what he says, I have had a total of 8 miscarriages now, and feel like this pregnancy is going to be my last chance, trying to not worry but it's so hard

I was offered scans at 6, 8 and 10 weeks after 2 miscarriages. When I was in the hospital for surgical management with my second loss I got the nurse to ask the consultant if he would take me on as a patient for further investigations, but he wouldn't after "only" two, but offered the reassurance scans and a prescription for progesterone as a consolation prize.

So probably depends a lot on your trust's policies, you yourself proactively asking for it, and a dusting of luck.

It may depend on the hospital. I've had 3 previous miscarriages. I'm pregnant with my 4th and I had bleeding twice in the first few weeks but the hospital wouldn't scan me. They said I had to wait until 12 weeks even though they knew about previous miscarriages so I went for a private scan instead.
I'm now 16 weeks pregnant and the hospital have only just told me last week that they have referred me to the recurrent miscarriage team, so I will be having more scans/check ups starting from this week.

I've just seen your other comment. I'm so sorry you've had 8 losses.
I was on progesterone for the first 12 weeks. But I'm also on blood thinning injections and aspirin as they found that the reason I was miscarrying was my blood was clotting so I wouldn't make it past the first trimester.
Have you had this looked into? Maybe a doctor would advise aspirin?

At the EPU with my 2nd MC, they told me that if I get pregnant again, they would happily do a reassurance scan early on. My EPU require a GP referral though. The 3rd pregnancy as via IVF- which offers an early scan anyways, but unfortunately, it was another MC.

OP, given you've had 8 MC's, I'm very surprises they aren't offering you an early scan! Have you been to a recurrent MC clinic? Sorry for your losses Flowers

Beekindbeehumble · 30/01/2022 21:14

I was offered a scan at 8 weeks in all my pregnancies.

20week · 30/01/2022 22:25

Second pregnancy was to rule out ectopic (brown blood, dodgy hcg numbers and one sided pain).
Third pregnancy I mentioned to gp I'd had bleeding and she called EPU but said it was up to them if they scan people - they did.
Also saw them a little later on as I had a TIA and at 17 weeks for abdominal pain (recurrent UTI's).
The receptionist at the EPU I went to was amazing and I'm certain if someone with a history of miscarriages rang her she'd do everything she could to get you in. I'd ring yours tomorrow and see what they say.
Sorry for your losses

They should offer you an early scan after one miscarriage let alone 8. I've been having nhs scans since before my period was even due with some pain and light spotting. I'm 20 weeks now and I've had 15 scans on the nhs. I would definitely push for a reassurance scan or just ring epau and stress your anxiety id ring them directly x

Nikki037297 · 02/02/2022 07:37

You can book one private if you Google ultrasound direct they have clinics all over the U.K. I’m going to have one the day I turn 6 weeks, that’s when they do them from, think it’s only £75 for an early scan. The nhs is hard to get an early scan unless you have had multiple miscarriages or an ectopic or you’ve had bleeding but where I live the GP has to refer you to the EPAC it’s not a self referral place

Keeping everything crossed for you 🤞

I got a scan at 5 weeks but it was too early (it was part of my treatment plan following recurrent losses). I then got scanned at 8 weeks where we saw the heartbeat. They said they would scan me again at 12 weeks but I explained how my anxiety was through the roof and 4 weeks was too long. As such, they agreed to scan me again at 10 weeks to offer me reassurance.

This was all pre-covid so I don't know if the rules will have changed. But, I didn't have any issues at all!
