Retroverted (flipped) uterus

Hi. I had my 12 week scan last week but they were unable to take measurements and I left without any scan pictures Sad They did say baby had heartbeat, was moving and an approximate measure of 12 weeks, just not the specific they need!
Anyway, they couldn’t see baby properly as apparently I have a retroverted (flipped) uterus. I didn’t have this in my previous pregnancy. I have a second attempt at the scan this week at 13 and a half weeks in the hope it will have corrected itself. I keep reading that normally it corrects itself between 10 and 12 weeks though. What happens if it doesn’t correct itself? Can I do anything (exercises) to help it to correct? I have back pain and am weeing constantly so I don’t think it has flipped yet. But would there be any obvious signs it corrected itself? Thank you.

It's very common, I have the same. Mine is permanently retroverted and hasn't been a problem in three pregnancies.
Once the baby gets big enough, it just moves position anyway as there's no more room so there's nothing specific you need to do, it will sort itself out.

I have this too, mine had moved by the scans but they still did really struggle to get measurements at my 12 week scan. Could they do an internal scan instead to get the measurements?

I have a retroverted uterus when I’m not pregnant. At my 12 week scan with my first child it was still retroverted but they were able to get all the measurements they need. It will move forward with the baby’s growth - when I googled it I think there were some very rare incidences of it getting stuck backward and doctors having to help it move forward but these are exceptionally rare. Mine must have moved at some point early 2nd trimester as I started getting a bump. It went back to retroverted after birth (had gynae scans which confirmed this) but is very much pointing forward again now in my second pregnancy! About 20% of women have a retroverted uterus so it’s not that unusual. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I had it with both DC, had to have internal scans, never got too big in the pregnancies and the bump never measured more than 32 weeks. Both DC fine.

I don’t know, they just said they would try again in a week as it should have flipped by then. So now I am worrying what happens if it’s not and over analysing everything! Obviously because it wasn’t retroverted before, it’s something new to me. I’ve not had the easiest first trimester with sickness, stress and Covid so was desperate for that reassurance.

Thank you. Do you know when yours flipped?

It's very common, especially after a pregnancy. It doesn't need to correct itself as such, it's just that as your uterus grows, it will fill out the whole space, so won't "flop" forwards OR backwards. You don't need to worry about this at all, although I understand that it's frustrating to feel they didn't get a "good" scan xx

That makes sense. I need to remember that 1.5 week growth can be a big difference at this stage. I’d also just done my 10 days isolation with Covid and sat around for days ill so wonder if that had an impact. Very much up and about again now though so hopefully it will sort itself soon.

I had my first really detailed scan last week at 12 and a half weeks. I also have a retroverted uterus. It's just the position of the uterus, nothing sinister!
If they're not getting great images with the abdominal scan then they should just do an internal/vaginal scan. This worked perfectly last week for me and we got all the tiniest measurements we needed and saw everything on the screen.

In fact I got great pics at both my 8 week and 11 week scans too, both were internal.

They were reluctant to do an internal scan and instead have rebooked me in for a weeks time. Not really sure why. They got an approximate 12 weeks and I definitely know my date conceived (one hit wonder 😅). Maybe time constraints or easier for them? I guess I just need to be patient and see what this week brings.
