Managing stretch marks

I'm 14 weeks now and my pregnancy app said it is time to start thinking about moisturising to prevent/ reduce stretch marks.

This is my first baby, but after my final growth spurt at maybe 12/13 I remember deep stretch mark around my hips which I hated. I know they can't be fully avoided and they 100% are nothing to be ashamed of. I would just like to minimise them as much as possible.

Does anyone have any tried and tested products which worked for them? I can only think of bio oil from the TV ads!

MNHQ update:
This is an old thread but if you've landed here while searching for stretch mark treatment options, our guide to the best stretch mark cream has been recently updated to reflect current availability. From creams to lotions, oils, balms and butters, it contains a good variety of options, all tried and tested by Mumsnetters and approved by skincare experts. We hope it's helpful! Flowers

Hi I had a baby last year .. bio oil did nothing for me I'm afraid :( except rinse my purse!!!
I use coco butter now but tbh they are still awful :( they do fade slightly on the upside :)

TruffleShuffles · 26/01/2022 15:45

Just for a bit of reassurance, I have loads of stretch marks from my teenage years round my hips and bum and didn’t get any at all with my first baby and I went to 41+3. I did moisturise sporadically but with just a regular Nivea moisturiser.

I’m currently 13weeks with my second and am again just using a Nivea moisturiser when I remember.

I used Bio oil religiously during pregnancy and didn't get any stretch marks... then stopped using it after birth and got stretch marks on my boobs when the milk came in (went from A to C). So I think it did something for me, hated everything feeling greasy though.

annlee3817 · 26/01/2022 16:15

I didn't use anything and didn't get any stretch marks, apparently its genetic, and no creams or oils will make a difference. I have had them from growth spurts when younger, also on hips and have them on my boobs from breastfeeding, very light though, but didn't get a single one on my stomach during pregnancy.

doadeer · 26/01/2022 16:17

I'm afraid you can't prevent them they happen deeper in the skin than creams can oenetrate. I used oils religiously twice a day and I got millions, my sister got none. It's just pot luck. Though it's still nice to look after your skin ❤️

postpartumagony · 26/01/2022 16:21

I used Bio Oil - DH rubbed it on my bump every night and didn't get it any during pregnancy. Getting some PP ones now as I haven't kept it up since so starting to do it again.

Puppyseahorse · 26/01/2022 16:23

Secret saviours. I was sceptical as they have limited trial data, but I’m prone to stretch marks and never got any while pregnant.

myyellowcar · 26/01/2022 16:33

I have stretch marks literally all over from growing as a teenager and I didn’t get any at all during pregnancy. I used Body Shop body butter twice a day but if I ran out I’d just use a generic moisturiser for a while.

Footnote · 26/01/2022 16:59

As pp said, it’s genetic and you can’t change anything. I have loads from adolescence, did nothing, didn’t get any.

^ I used this too and mama mio oil. I used it religiously and multiple times a day.
NatMoz · 26/01/2022 17:10

I get them as a teenager too and no stretch marks. Gave birth at 40+0 with quite a small baby though

Mommabear20 · 26/01/2022 17:12

I used bio oil for my first and didn't get a single stretch mark despite being (possibly) unhealthily skin at the time. Couldn't get hold of it during my second pregnancy (thank you very much covid!) so used a cream specifically marketed to stop stretch marks and now my stomach is covered in them and I hate them!

Totalwasteofpaper · 26/01/2022 17:15

I got a lot of stretch marks as a teen. Now 35 weeks pregnant and no stretch mark in sight.
I sporadically/unreliably used mamma mio and bio oil

I think it’s pot luck tbh.

Caspianberg · 26/01/2022 17:15

Bio oil.
I now everyone says genetic, but every family member has loads, and I have stretch marks from teens, but didn’t get any in pregnancy

lucylucyapplejuicy · 26/01/2022 17:31

I'm not sure if anything work but I hear coconut oil is great and is good for your skin anyway a bonus if it helps with stretch marks!

When I had my first I got stretch marks at 38 weeks I didn't have a single one until then with my second I didn't get any and he was born at 40 weeks! I'm both pregnancies I used bio oil and coconut oil

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 26/01/2022 17:35

I used that Palmers Tummy Butter with my first - no idea if it worked as I didn't get any, then second pregnancy didn't use anything and didn't get any. Like others have said it's genetic. I'd give the Palmers a go though, it smelt lovely and my skin felt really smooth after applying it!

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 17:38

i'm pretty sure they are hormonal.

I got a few on my bikini line at 3 months with no actual belly growth. None later with a massive bump 🤷🏻‍♀️

I also have stretch marks around my stomach and thighs that I got around the age of 12-14. Always been a bug bear of mine although now at 35 I have accepted them and they faded a lot but I never planned children and here I am at 40 weeks pregnant and I am HUGE and have no new stretch marks at all! - I feel I can blame my teenage ones on pregnancy finally 🙈

I've moisturised the bump a lot but not every single day using cocoa Nivea and a boots stretch mark balm but also kept up weekly exercise throughout (even now) and wonder if that helped my skin elasticity at all... all I know is I am so massive I do not know how my stomach will ever go back down after 😳

Stretch marks develop when the collagen in the skin is stretched beyond its elastic limit," Dr Justine Hextall, consultant dermatologist, at The Harley Medical Group told HuffPost UK Parents.

"This causes fissuring which appears as stretch marks in our skin."

During the latter stages of pregnancy specifically when the baby is rapidly growing, a woman's skin cells rupture due to being pulled apart so much.

When the cells rupture they will also leave scarring - the stretch mark.

"Some women have a genetic disposition to stretch marks, so if your mum had them you might be more likely to have them."

Dr Hextall agreed, adding: "There are some women who may just have more elastic skin and can sail through growth spurts and pregnancies with perfect skin, others are not so lucky.

"It is that old-age, look at your mother!"
How can I prevent getting stretch marks?
Before noticing stretch marks have developed, there are a number of things women can do to prevent them.

No single thing will always work, so understanding how you can look after your skin as early as possible will be an advantage.

Dr. Erich Schulte, founder of QMS Medicosmetics said an effective method to prevent stretch marks is a combination of regular exercise and healthy nutrition.
Maintaining a healthy weight will minimise any rapid weight gain that could contribute towards excessive stretching of the skin.
He told HuffPost UK Parents: "Boost your routine with supplements ideally containing Vitamins E and C (like Intravital Plus) and make sure you choose skincare products that will strengthen the collagen and elastin fibres in your skin tissue before you're further along in your pregnancy."

Dr. Kishan Raichuram, skin health expert at IGDP, said another way to prevent stretch marks is through keeping your skin as healthy and hydrated as possible.
"While it's impossible to entirely prevent them, pregnant women can improve skin condition to hopefully reduce the chances by keep the area well moisturised and nourished," he said.

Dr. Schulte agreed, adding that preparing your skin as soon as you know you are pregnant will help strengthen it.
He explained: "This will make your less prone to damage and injury to the tissue. It will also help restore the skin post-pregnancy.

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 18:47

Being older helps too, younger women get them more.

irishfarmer · 27/01/2022 12:03

Thanks every one. I'll look up your suggestions.

I need to get better at moisturising over all, I do my face most days and that's it!

another vote for Bio Oil. I've used Weleda and Palmers before, now on my 3rd pregnancy (3 trimester) and no stretchmarks THUS FAR. I think really, moisturising itself is really important, whatever products you use. And yeah, I agree genetics definitely play a role x
