Group B Strep - Do I need to be concerned?

Just had a call from my midwife to say I've got Group B Strep on the back of a urine sample. I'm 24 weeks (second baby) and will have antibiotics as of tomorrow to take then an antibiotics drip in labour.

Has this happened to anyone? Do I need to be concerned? Did it impact your birth at all?

It happened my DSis. Great you know in advance. Move once you know labour is happening so you won't be anyway stressed about getting in on time for drip and do whatever you need to to get comfortable. Afair my ds was done with drip for active labour and birth itself, someone might confirm. This will be the way for any further pregnancy also.

Just had another call to say it was from a swab that I done and not actually in my urine meaning I don't need antibiotics now but I will when it comes to labour*

@HeyGirlHeyBoy Thank you so much for letting me know about your experience. Did you have to stay in a bit longer for checks on baby?

I did. I was in for 36 hours in total

It was my Dsister rather than me. I don't remember her being in very long, certainly home after 48h on 4th dc. Main thing is you're avoiding a nasty complication. Sister didn't know for first si her tiny dc had a little iv 'stick'. She was thrilled to avoid for the others.

I was tested with my first and was positive. I had iv antibiotics in labour and we were in for 4 days after birth, although I had an emcs so we would have been in longer anyway. With my second I had a vbac and she came so quick there was only time for 1 lot of the iv antibiotics before she came Grin All was fine though, we were home in 24 hrs Smile I work in a special needs school and have seen some awful brain damage as a result of a group b strep infection so I was relieved it was picked up. The only real impact it had on the birth for me was not being able to have a water birth due to the cannula and not being able to be on the midwife led unit, but although those things would have been lovely, they weren't particularly high up on my list anyway.

I tested positive for gbs. Had antibiotics every 4 hours throughout labour. I think they like you to have 2 lots of antibiotics. I didn't stay in any longer. It's a much bigger risk if you have it but don't know you have it, so it's a good thing you know.

Thanks everyone!

Starting to think about labour as I am approaching 35 weeks. Say for example, contractions begin at home and are manageable, do I still need to ring and be seen straight away for antibiotics? Or can I labour at home for as long as possible before going in?

I know that if my waters go before contractions to ring the hospital but not just not sure how it works when contractions are first! With my first, I was at home until I went to the hospital and was 4cm. My waters then went at 8cm...

Thanks so much!

@babyboybluewithnumbertwox it's the waters breaking that's key I think - as that's when the infection risk starts kicking in. You've got plenty of time to confirm this with your midwife though!
