Travelling when pregnant if older?

We have been planning a final pre-baby holiday for when I will be 22-24w pregnant, probably within Europe although also considering longer flights as we'd love to take a relaxing beach holiday but it will be March and mostly still too cold in Europe. I was feeling confident about the trip then DH came across advice that pregnant women over 35 shouldn't travel, especially for a first pregnancy as this one is and is now reluctant. I'm 41 but my midwife didn't mention this as being a problem when I briefly asked about travel at my booking appointment. no problems have been identified in the pregnancy yet (I am taking aspirin but only due to age). The advice not to travel is on the official Australian advice and appears on a few other websites but is not part of the NHS advice. Has anyone else been told not to travel, just based on maternal age or would you go for it?

I have never heard of this and will be travelling as an over 35 year old.

Only ever follow NHS advice. Advice for people in different countries is irrelevant, it’s based on different safety standards, healthcare systems, cultural norms. Etc etc. stick to the core NHS advice or madness awaits.

I've never heard of this, I'm 38 and 16 weeks pregnant. I had a midwife appointment today and mentioned about going on holiday to the Canaries at around 25 weeks (I only mentioned it as I needed my MatB1 form) and the midwife just said have a great holiday.

I'm off to Croatia for final pre-baby holiday at 22 weeks. I'm 36 and this is first baby. Never heard anything about this being an issue. Can't see why "older mums" would be any different to younger mums?

Go and enjoy yourself OP! I will be :)

I went to Italy at about 22 weeks with my first pregnancy. Was 38 at the time. Midwife didn’t have any concerns and I have never heard about age being a risk factor for travel.

I’m 39, first time mother and going to Miami in my 21st week. There shouldn’t be an issue as long as you’re having a relatively uncomplicated pregnancy?

Usually Australian advice is relatively lax compared to the NHS as I look it up every time the NHS says “don’t take this”! I’d ignore it, it seems like overkill and possibly to save Australians from themselves in Bali or Europe.

I'm 39 and pregnant via ivf, second pregnancy but it's twins! I spoke to my private gynae who generally thinks I always do too much to basically request permission for 2 trips, one to the states at 18 weeks and one in europe at 23. She was extremely chilled about both and told me to go and have fun. Not sure what she would have said about long haul for the 23 week one - we went long haul with a 12 hour flight very early on at 6 weeks and she freaked out a bit! But all was fine. She told me to walk lots on the plane and she liked that we were flying business in order to rest legs upright etc. I also took a blood thinning injection, clexane, 1 hour before take off in both directions (on her advice).

I was almost 39 with my first and only pregnancy and flew at 25 weeks to work in a different country for eight weeks. I flew back three weeks before DD was born. I did get a fit to fly letter for the return flight just in case, but the airline didn't ask.

I travelled (hiking and camping) to Croatia for 3 weeks from 19-22 weeks pregnant with my first pregnancy, aged 38. I've never heard of advice you shouldn't at all, but would have ignored it! Go enjoy your last baby free holiday for yonks, and as long as you don't go bungy jumping you'll be fine.

At age 38 and 18 weeks we flew to south Africa and had a fab holiday. If you are having a routine pregnancy I can't see why you couldn't travel.

Also - what we can't answer is your general health. I had my last baby at 41 and an easy pregnancy. I was really upset about having to be induced at week 40 and a midwife pointed out that she sees 'less healthy under 40 pregnancy women'. In my case I am very active, no major illnesses or antibiotics for over 20 years.

So you know your general health - I think that is the real answer
