Diagnosed with GD at 36 weeks

FTM here and I've been diagnosed with GD at 36 weeks - I had been tested over the past couple of months and passed each time but continued to get tested as baby is measuring big.

I have to see someone tomorrow to discuss blood sugars / diet etc but wondered if anyone had any experience with being diagnosed this late on in pregnancy?

Before the GD diagnosis the consultant said they recommend an induction on babies due date. The babies head is measuring big, and the bdomen is measuring above the 97th percentile.

Before the GD diagnosis I wasn't due to have another scan until 39 weeks, do you think they will bring this forward?

Also do you think they will offer a c-section now due to GD?

Feeling awful and so worried.

Didn’t want to read and run. I was diagnosed with GD around 32 weeks, because baby had a big tummy (I passed the test at 28 weeks so bit of a shock). My meetings were to explain monitoring and diet.

Currently 39 weeks and have been able to control with diet since- I got a little blood sugar monitor to test with 4 times a day. Basically I’m more careful with carbs and have learnt cheese is good!

Anyway, the consultant said as a result of baby now growing big she wouldn’t recommend going further than 40+6. So as a result I’m due an induction at some point this week. No mention of a c section being required but I suppose an induction does increase the chance.

Thanks so much, thats really useful and what I was hoping for. Really want to avoid a c-section if possible. Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy. X

I was also diagnosed late - I think I was about 35 weeks. I was induced (successfully) at 39 weeks.

Hiya, I have gestational diabetes - I wasn't diagnosed late (28 weeks) but your birth options will depend on lots of things. In my Trust you're offered induction or c section at 38 weeks if you're on any medication. They let you go longer if you're diet controlled (past 40 weeks but not sure exact gestation).
I was offered induction or c section at 38 weeks (I'm on maximum dose of metformin). I've gone for c section as baby abdomen big which is an increased risk of shoulder dystocia and I have polyhydraminios (excess amniotic fluid) which increases risk of cord prolapse.
Your situation is yet to be determined as you don't yet know if you need meds etc and your diabetes obstetrician will talk you through all the pros and cons of everything. It's not a one size fits all. You'll have frequent growth scans for sure.
The diet is miserable but at least you've not got to do it for long! Good luck

I'm 34w and just in the middle of a weeks worth of home testing. Previously passed three separate GTT tests but my finger prick tests are mainly high readings. I'm freaking out. Section booked for 39w irrespective of GD but hoping they'll bring to forward to 38.

Thanks, I have an appointment tomorrow so hopefully I'll know more then 😁

Mad isn't it? I passed my GTT too, wasn't even close to the cut off point. I was only diagnosed after they discovered polyhydraminios on a growth scan and gave me the blood sugar kit to test at home.

There's a really great Facebook group called Gestational Diabetes UK. Highly recommend for info and support. Also a website run by one of the admins (I think) with amazing GD friendly recipes etc. Hope you're ok. It's hard to accept but much better that they've diagnosed it xc

I’m wondering if anyone can help me out as well.. I haven’t been diagnosed as I have no risk factors and managed to evade a urine a sample for my 24 and 28 week appointments. Then there have been trace levels of glucose in my urine at my 32 and 35 week appointments. Midwife wasn’t overly concerned and didn’t refer me as said was too late now.

I have been very thirsty and dry mouth last few weeks, I decided to buy a blood glucose monitor to try and figure out on my own. My fasting level this morning was 5.2 and then I had a few slices of toast with beans about 11am and then had 3 medium sized dates with a cup of tea at 2pm, I was outside then so couldn’t do a reading until I got back Which was 3pm and my reading was 8.2 nmol. Does 8.2 nmol indicate gestational diabetes or is it hard to say based on that?

Thanks in advance

@Slk3558 fasting level should be

Yes, I think that it sounds like you might have GD. However, you've eaten the absolute worst food you can for spiking blood sugar. Toast & beans & dates is mega carb and sugar overload. I have GD and my reading would probably be around 9-10 after that. I would get in contact with your midwife ASAP. Keep track of your fasting levels and 1 hour post meal levels. Like previous poster said post meals could be less than 7.8
thingymaboob · 25/01/2022 16:37

Sorry, I just re-read post, the 3pm reading would have just reflected the dates, not the beans and toast. I think that reading is high for a few dates. It's not too late to get checked. I think that's misinformation from your midwife as if you have poorly controlled diabetes for a month that could cause complications

@thingymaboob thanks for the advice. the dry mouth and thirst is really awful. I did test subsequently at 3.15pm it was 7.1 and then by 16:15 it was 4.9, almost like a spike and then a crash!? Yeh 8.2 does sound high for a few dates. I’m worried about calling them as they might just be like why are you buying a blood sugar monitor and self diagnosing lol. I’m gonna have chicken salad tonight and check my reading after an hour. I had the high carb toast and beans deliberately and wanted to test after an hour but had to rush out somewhere. Xx

Well, I bought a blood sugar monitor when I had symptoms and they brought forward my GTT. However, I "passed" my GTT but when I saw my consultant they discovered polyhydraminios (lots of fluid - GD women get it) and I told her the story of my blood glucose so she gave me the hospital issued monitor and told me to monitor my levels for a week to see if it was GD. After 2 days of monitoring it was clear it was GD and I was out straight into metformin
