Molar pregnancy... any advice/experience please!?

Hi, hoping to get a bit of advice or knowledge from someone who my have experienced a similar situation. Fell pregnant in July 21, found out on 12w scan Sept 21 that sadly baby had stopped growing around 8 weeks. Had a procedure under local a few days later, bleeding for a while but after 3/4 weeks or so bleeding had stopped and had negative pregnancy test. Have since had 3 seemingly normal periods.
Got a call 3 weeks ago saying they have now found out it was a partial molar pregnancy, person on the phone from hospital said "I hope you've not been having unprotected sex" well I didn't know I wasn't meant to did I! In fact was explicitly told by nurse following the procedure to go for it when we felt ready.
Anyway fast forward 2 weeks to January and now I am over a week late, getting positive tests and definite pregnancy symptoms.
I can't find a single similar situation on the Internet nor advice about what to do if you do fall pregnant before molar pregnancy has been tested etc. Has anyone experienced this or know someone who has!? Called the specialist hospital in charing cross and all they said was wait and see but not any info about potential scenarios/outcomes from this situation. Thanks.

Hi OP. I'm sorry to hear about your lost pregnancy and sorry you are having to deal with this stress now!

I had a partial molar pregnancy but they diagnosed it at 8 weeks before the surgery so I was advised by Charing X immediately. They told me not to get pregnant until my levels had dropped which took circa 6 months. During this time I was monitored by Charing X through fortnightly blood and urine tests. They told me the reason they don't advise getting pregnant is they need to be able to see these hormone levels drop to be confident they've removed all the cells/tissue from the first pregnancy, and getting pregnant will mask that since hormone levels will rise anyway.

I don't know what happens in your situation, I'm sorry. And I'm sorry about the annoying comment about having unprotected sex when you weren't told not too, implying you were being irresponsible or rebellious or something! How were you to know!

All I can say is that if you're now under the care of Charing X not to worry too much, they are the absolute experts in the field and have huge amounts of experience. Could you contact them again and ask to speak to someone about your situation, for reassurance? Send an email and follow up by phone making it explicit that you are concerned and anxious and would appreciate speaking to someone. I found them very helpful and responsive but like a lot of NHS services you do need to be pushy. I think it is worth being proactive. The other thing I'll say is that partial molars are much much less dangerous than full molar pregnancies, which are much the much riskier ones.

Sorry I couldn't be more help bit hopefully someone on here can x x good luck OP

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it. Also quite reassuring and I think you're right together on the phone/email and chase up! It's just such a rare thing isn't it - literally no one I know has even heard of it, let alone these specific circumstances.

Hi OP
So sorry to hear about your partial molar. I had one in 2013 and was also under charring x.

I just want to second what pp said. Definitely contact charing x they're great. And partial molars are way less likely to be invasive so if you are pregnant chances are everything will be OK.

Just to add it is worth pushing for EPAU scan at 8 weeks so they can check it's not a molar. This has sometimes needed a bit of advocating from me in previous pregnancies as molars are rare and sometimes even midwives and GPs don't know protocol. Don't be shy about advocating/explaining to midwife at booking in.

The last thing I wanted to say was sometimes having had a molar pregnancy can make you more anxious or vigilant about subsequent pregnancies. I sometimes envy people who have not had a rare complication and can sail through pregnancy without second guessing themselves and wondering if they'll be unlucky again. Just tryy and be compassionate with yourself if you feel haunted by the experience. I am now 36 weeks pregnancy with my second child and went on to have a very healthy pregnancy 6 months after the molar. Both very straightforward pregnancies but I still worried.

Good luck and fingers crossed for an uncomplicated pregnancy for you

OP if you do manage to get in touch with them and you feel able do let us know what they say x

Thank you all, really helpful advice! To update have called charing x and they said my levels were low at the time of the first sample but to do another one next week. They also said you couldn't fall pregnant again whilst still having the molar tissue as your body wouldn't allow you "to fall pregnant when it thinks you're still pregnant" which makes sense and is quite reassuring. In the mean time they said to go to EPAU which I did yesterday. Internal scan couldn't see much (sonographer also said couldn't se anything sinister though), however bloods HCG came back at the right level for around 4-5 weeks pregnant. Got another blood test in 2 days and they said if it has doubled it seems normal, also they will book another scan in a week or so as might be too early atm. So it does indeed seem to be a new pregnancy but will wait for more bloods and scans to confirm. Also really feel the comment around people who haven't experienced loss/complications. At least I was lucky to already have my DC before this current situation, so just had the normal level of worry before! If it is a viable and successfull pregnancy this time (or not actually!) I forsee a lot of mental energy being spent on thinking about all the things that can go wrong.

Hello, I had a partial molar pregnancy a few years back and was looked after by Charing cross who were wonderful - I was also pregnant before I was told not to be. They told me that the reason they ask you not to fall pregnant is that they use your non-pregnant HCG levels to make sure these are falling week by week showing that you don't have any molar tissues left. So if you fall pregnant it means they can't do that monitoring but if your HCG levels were low when they tested then you are likely at low risk already of any molar tissues being present.

Try not to worry too much x

So! I thought I would come back and update this thread. Charing x have now discharged me. They have said that "you couldn't fall pregnant again if there was still tissue inside producing the hormone" so I guess if anyone finds this post via Google I hope that bring you some reassurance.
Also a bit of good news, I've had an early scan today (am 9w1d) and all is going well so far with this current pregnancy, heartbeat is good... in fact so good there was 2! Which is very shocking and very exciting, also just the most wonderful news following on from the molar pregnancy. Early days still but fingers crossed for this pregnancy to continue well and to be happy and healthy. Thank you to those that took the time to post, it was a great comfort during a difficult time.

Congratulations OP! Star what a great update x

@YouPutTheScrewInTheTuna hey, just seen this thread and was going to comment as I had a partial molar last year. Took longer for my levels to return to normal than you though. Great to hear you are pregnant and it's a twin pregnancy. I am also pregnant at only 5 weeks, has a reassurance scan already to to make sure it isn't molar again but it's a little to early. Hope everything goes well for you !!

@YouPutTheScrewInTheTuna thank you for sharing your experience. This provides me comfort - can't believe you're expecting twins! I hope everything has gone well for you x
