Going abroad pregnant

Has anyone been on holiday abroad whilst pregnant? How far along were you in your pregnancy when you went? Did you have any issues flying or when you were there? Where did you go? And do you recommend?

We got married during the pandemic then got pregnant. We would really like one last holiday/honeymoon/babymoon before baby arrives but a bit nervous about it all. Just looking for any advice and tips from experience xx

I didn't but my recommendation would be to get some really good travel insurance Smile

Hopefully someone will be along soon to answer your questions.

Yes I went to Lanzarote at 31 weeks with my second, Mexico, Thailand and Indonesia when pregnant with my first up to 28 weeks.

If you are healthy and have no complications go wherever you want to! Pregnancy doesn’t stop you travelling

Sleepy86 · 22/01/2022 09:20

I travelled for work to Germany at about 8 weeks, holiday to Cyprus at 21 weeks and work Xmas party to Antwerp at around 30 weeks (although this one was by Eurostar). Just make sure you've got good travel insurance and check with your midwife wether you need to wear compression socks or take any other precautions x

I’m looking at going to the Canaries either in April when I’ll be 28 weeks or May when I’ll be 32 weeks. Leaning more towards April but ideally want the weather to be warm enough to swim in the ocean.
I say go for it. It’s your last chance to have a holiday just you two for probably the next 20years. The only thing I would suggest looking into is Zika virus as it rules out a lot of destinations like the Caribbean. And obviously get good travel insurance!

RavenclawDiadem · 23/01/2022 12:47

Went to Cyprus at 20 weeks ish and it was fine. Past the early sicky stage and not yet at the knackered and enormous stage.

MCMP13 · 23/01/2022 14:53

Thank you for all your replies, think we will look at going at around 22 weeks hopefully! Xx

I did 7 months pregnant. To cologne for new year

Aspidistra1 · 23/01/2022 14:58

Went to Tenerife at 20 weeks and New York at 28 weeks with DC1. Planning to go to Crete at 26 weeks this year with DC2.

I used Ravenhall for travel insurance for NYC last time as their insurance clearly covered the baby as well whereas others were less clear but their website seems not to be working now, not sure if they are still trading.

Pre-covid and zika, we used to go the Thailand a great deal and there were always European looking, pregnant women. Most looked at least 2nd trimester too.

My worry would be zika, and is the reason we haven't been back for many years. Make sure you see a travel health Dr/nurse long before you go incase you need vaccinations for other things. You'll also to check with the airlines. Each airline is different in terms of hours of flight vs how far along you are. Also, check whether you'd need a fit to fly on the return journey to the UK.

babyboybluewithnumbertwox · 23/01/2022 15:15

Off to Portugal in 3 weeks for 10 nights! I'll be 26 weeks 😘

Strawberry0909 · 23/01/2022 15:21

Went to Cyprus around 26 weeks, needed a letter from the DR to confirm I was fit to fly, check with your airline, was fine just a bit uncomfortable sat down too long so spent most the flight stood in the aisle

Tullig · 23/01/2022 15:25

I flew an hour and forty minutes each way twice a week throughout my pregnancy until 36 weeks when I had to go on maternity leave — never any issue.

HW1989 · 23/01/2022 15:38

I just came back from two weeks in fuerteventura at 28-30 weeks. It was absolutely lovely to have a trip away before baby comes. 4 hour flight was enough for me I’d say, was beginning to get uncomfortable. I’d suggest not far beyond 30 weeks as it does begin getting exhausting. And go somewhere with good medical services available if needed. I had a panic when baby stopped moving for 4 days but very easily booked in for an ultrasound and was quickly assured all was fine.

NanooCov · 23/01/2022 19:07

I did in both pregnancies. All short haul for work (mainly UK) and two holidays - first to Sardinia and second to Sicily. I think I stopped flying around 28 weeks.

GlitteryGreen · 09/03/2022 17:17

Glad to find this thread, I was just about to post a similar one!

@MCMP13 did you book anything in the end?

I really want to go but didn't know whether it was sensible and I should just stay in the UK. But I know it will be so long before we can go abroad again so really would like to do it.

Footnote · 09/03/2022 17:21

I wasn’t allowed to fly (or travel anywhere if I would be more than 20 minutes from a hospital) from the 20w scan, so get comprehensive travel insurance as soon as you finish booking the trip, also for UK self-drive holidays.

GlitteryGreen · 09/03/2022 17:40

Oh that's interesting @Footnote - if you don't mind me asking, did you have any indication you might not be able to travel before the 20 weeks?

Just wondering if I should maybe wait until after that scan to book anything if that could be the case.

firstimemamma · 09/03/2022 17:52

Went to Paris by Eurostar when I was 5 months with my first - was brilliant!

PAFMO · 09/03/2022 18:01

Old thread but I flew (for work for a 6 week contract) at 28 weeks and came back at 34. I did get a fit to fly letter to come back in case I was asked, but nobody did.

Fredstheteds · 09/03/2022 18:15

Flew at 30 weeks only to jersey had to have a letter- cost me £40 and no one asked for it

Covidwoes · 09/03/2022 20:29

I went to New York in 2018 at 17 weeks. I had insurance which covered pregnancy. I had a lovely time, and my sickness had eased.

Footnote · 09/03/2022 20:36

@GlitteryGreen none at all, I’d been planning to move countries at 7 months pregnant but we had to postpone.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 09/03/2022 20:39

You will need travel insurance which covers not only you but also your unborn baby.

Caramelcap · 09/03/2022 20:46

Travelled to The Gambia in two pregnancies, both around 20 weeks. Only issue was swollen feet/ankles in the first couple of days after the flight out there.

Definitely recommend getting some vitamin D in pregnancy 😊 Enjoy!

gogohm · 09/03/2022 21:12

I flew to the U.K. from the USA where I lived. 10.5 hour flight was fine
