How cautious are you being about covid now?

Hi guys,

I'm 31 weeks pregnant. Triple vaccinated. Have asthma but it's controlled with inhalers. We live in London where covid cases are coming down - but are obviously still high. We've been avoiding busy indoor places while cases have been high over the past few weeks. Have a toddler who attends nursery full time but this is something we can't control as my husband and I work full time.

Just wondered how cautious other pregnant people are being about Covid now? On the one hand, I feel like it's pretty difficult to avoid getting Covid (unless we completely self-isolate), I'm (hopefully) well protected from severe illness, and I'd rather get it now than closer to due date. On the other hand, I've found this pregnancy pretty tiring with a toddler and reluctant to make things worse!

I'm 29 weeks and triple jabbed, no health issues. I'm not really taking Covid into consideration when deciding our plans tbh. All of the stats I've read show that the booster works effectively for my age/health profile, and I have a toddler but only in nursery 3 days so I have to keep her busy with activities and it's just too cold to be out in parks all day. She likes indoor activities like soft play, theatre and museums, and having missed out on them during lockdowns I don't want her to miss out any more.

I’m 40 weeks pregnant and have covid right now. I’m due to get induced so have been being a bit more cautious than I had up to this point. My son managed to bring it home from school though! I’m just coming to the end of my isolation period but have only had cold symptoms, nothing major. I’ve had both doses of the vaccine plus the booster though which I’m certain has helped.

I’m 37+5 and have it at the moment. We were being somewhat cautious, masks whenever we went out and avoiding overly crowded places but DS bought it home from school and gave it to me and DP. I’m triple jabbed but have still had a bad cough and been very tired. Midwife has me on a virtual COVID ward and gave me an pulse oximeter so I can make sure all is well. I’m just glad we all got it now rather than closer to my due date.

I’m 27 weeks and am avoiding indoor places with other people while unmasked.
The stats around stillbirth/miscarriage etc for covid concern me, as does not really knowing the long-term impact of reduced oxygen levels on a foetus.
I’m WFH and taking taxis, so realise I’m very lucky, and don’t have a child in school. I just figure it’s not that long to stay extra careful, though it is a bit boring.
FFP2 masks are really good and I use those pretty much anywhere indoors including appointments.

I'm 37 weeks and having a c section at 38 weeks and there's an outbreak of covid at my daughters preschool (20+ cases) so we pulled her out when we became aware of the first few cases and she's not going back until after the c section. We are pretty much isolating for 2 weeks before section. Husband WFH, no indoor places.

Haven't changed my behaviour at all. Have already had covid though this month and three vaccines though so should be ok 🤷

Very cautious as I'm 39 weeks and cases have only just recently peaked where I am.
If I were in your shoes OP I'd continue being very cautious until case rates are lower.
But then cases may rebound next week as more people go back to face to face work and stop wearing masks so much.

I'm 27 weeks and had covid last week. Had my booster at Halloween. I had cold like symptoms and sore throat for a few days. No fever or aches/pains. Went back to work this week

Thanks, all. Interesting to read your responses - a real variety!

I’m 29 weeks and double jabbed, both during this pregnancy. I’ll be carrying on as normal until 35/36 weeks at which point we’ll stop eating out and going to crowded indoor places.
I went to a big indoor dog show yesterday, most people were masked and you had to be jabbed or have done a LFT to get in so I felt pretty safe.

I'm 37 weeks and tested positive on weds. My son had 17 of his class test positive so it was inevitable it would come home.

I was really I'll Thursday and Friday but perking up today.

I've been cautious but not avoiding everything due to covid for a while, I work in healthcare so needed to continue working.

My biggest concern is DH testing positive and me going into early labour.

It's more the practicalities of labour and new baby with covid that is causing me stress.

Good luck and do what make you comfortable

I considered this a lot and seriously thought about taking DS out of nursery prior to due date. After a lot of back and forth, we decided to keep him in as we felt the structure etc was important for him and he could have been stuck at home with me for up to 4.5 weeks. I was always of the opinion that if he was attending nursery, we might as well carry on as normal.

I ended up testing positive the day before my due date then DH obviously got it a few days later. Only minor symptoms but the main issue was that DH could no longer be my birth partner as we then had no childcare for DS as we were both isolating. Honestly though, it was fine. Yes I'd have rather he was there but we had a very quick labour and having to be isolated while we were in hospital was definitely a perk. If it had been first baby there wouldn't have been a problem as DH would still have been able to attend.

We were incredibly unlucky but I don't regret the decision. I'd always rather be ill while pregnant than ill with a newborn.

glasspaw · 22/01/2022 16:27

First pregnancy, triple jabbed and 36 weeks. I’m largely isolating now and DH will be from next week too. Fortunate to both be able to work from home though and appreciate not everyone has that option.

I’m not necessarily scared of catching it for health reasons but the idea of not having him there for labour is terrifying so we are being very careful to try and avoid risking it.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 22/01/2022 17:06

Not massively cautious. I had Covid over Christmas at 22 weeks and was lucky it was very mild like a cold. I’m wearing a mask in shops and would avoid a very busy indoor area but I’m mostly relaxed because hopefully I have enough immunity to avoid it for the rest of my pregnancy as I’ve recently had it and am triple jabbed. And to be fair if I do get it again it will likely come from my 4 year old bringing it home from school again.

Somerandomgirl · 22/01/2022 20:57

My partner has never stopped working since the first ever lockdown...so i came to terms with it all...cant escape it... now kid goes nursery too they almost every week have covid case there.... i try to not think about it... whatevers meant to happen...theres so many other things to get ill from and to happen generally..... we dont hide from them.....
