Muffled Ears/pulsing sound

Hi,

Hoping for some help, reassurance. I have just turned 8 weeks pregnant, for the last 3/4 weeks i have had this awful pressure in my ears. Goes from them sounding like they are popping, to then as if i can just hear the blood flowing. Have spoke to dr on this a few times, she believes this is due to sinus infection as have been feeling heavy in the face also and feel like i need to constantly blow my nose. Had a course of antibiotics, seemed to get better and a couple days later it was back with the pulsing sound :( ... Spoke with my doctor again who gave me another course of antibiotics and said could be the first course was not enough to kill an infection.

This is becoming so distressing for me and a constant distraction, i feel so miserable.

Hi @hayleynk27 I had this for about a week it was driving me insane. I had acupuncture and she put a seed on a pressure point in my ear and its been fine since. Such relief. I know it's a bizarre thing but it really did help! Good luck!

Oh really? Did you have nasal congestion with it too? Or was yours literally just ear issues.

I'd honestly take the nausea and sickness over this feeling Sad

Hello, i had something similar for months, it was a Pulsating sound and I could hear my heartbeat. Doctor said that their is a big vein or artery (can't remember which one he said) next to your ear. When you are pregnant body works harder to push blood around so that could have been causing the ear sensitivity.

@SantoPalo hey.. oh this pretty much seems like what I have! Did it go by itself?
Oddly It seems like the more I eat as the day goes on it gets somewhat better.. maybe just coincidence of course.
Did you get it early in your pregnancy?

Its low blood pressure if its the same what i had until second trimester, was so bloody awful constantly poping if I'm standing up

Happenchance · 21/01/2022 21:01

Have you had your iron levels checked? Low iron can cause pulsatile tinnitus.

hayleynk27 · 21/01/2022 21:07

@Somerandomgirl, oh really? I was curious about this. I do have midwife appointment this week so will speak to them then. I might try call drs Monday.. not that they are much help just blame everything on pregnancy and make it impossible to speak to them in person!

@Happenchance also something I had seen. Had blood checked just before I would of fallen pregnant, all was fine.
Due to midwife this week so I'm sure I'll find out then when they do the checks Smile

Thank you for your advise!

Does it go away when you lie down on your back for a bit? It sounds like an incredibly annoying condition called patulous eustachian tube, which can develop in or be exacerbated by pregnancy. It's when you lose mass around your eustachian tube so it stays open, causing autophony (hearing your own heartbeat, swallowing, breathing, voice etc) and a feeling of fullness. It usually goes away when you lie down as the increase in blood pressure can help to close the tube, but not always the case.

I've had it on and off for years (not pregnancy related) and it's horrible. Some days I just don't bother speaking as I can't stand the sound of my own voice echoing around my head.

SantoPalo · 21/01/2022 21:30

@hayleynk27 I think I had it on and off until 2 trimester. I dont think mine was due to low blood pressure as I had blood pressure checks and was all fine. I noticed it more when laying on my side and ear on pillow

hayleynk27 · 21/01/2022 21:41

@LaMadrilena I do still have it when I lay down, I don't hear my own voice or having anything like that. It's just the the pulsing blood flow noise I hear. I'm wondering if I have the popping in ears due to sinus infection and the pulsing is a different issue.

It's not constant, I do get some relief but some days are worse than others.

I had this but not as early on as you in pregnancy. Google pregnancy tinnitus. Extra blood flow around your body during pregnancy. It's very annoying/distracting but I found some days it was quieter than others. Easier said than done but hope can find things that help to detract your attention from it! Should go once baby arrives mine did instantly! X

I know this was a long time ago, but I’m really suffering with this right now. Just wondering if this disappeared for you before or after birth?
