Progesterone during pregnancy

Hi there,

I had lletz a few years ago, just the once. I am now pregnant and was sent for an internal scan to measure my cervix at 17 weeks.

My cervix measured at 28mm which is considered normal, just on the short side. The consultant gave me two options:

To wait and see if the cervix length changes in two weeks time or to start progesterone supplements now.

I origionally said I would wait and see in case I don’t need to take medication unnecessarily and wasn’t told of any risks or anything so assumed it would be fine to wait.

I then read in forums that some people’s cervix lengths have really shortened in the space of a week so I’m feeling anxious now.

I couldn’t have a scan any earlier as the preterm team are only in every two weeks. I was thinking of booking a private scan for early next week to see what the length is, then decide?

I have also thought about just starting the progesterone now but I feel anxious about taking medication whilst pregnant :(

Has anyone else been through the same and their length stayed the same or even got longer?

Has anyone taken progesterone and their baby was all okay?

I also am anxious if I do not start the medication now then I may have to have the stitch which scares me too!

Any advice is welcome!

I haven't had the experience you describe but I did take progesterone in pg (recommended to me for recurrent miscarriage) and my baby was fine and healthy. I don't think progesterone would harm a baby. Rather than waiting for private scans etc, could you call back and ask for info on the progesterone, is there any risk involved? Good luck Op Flowers

I would go for the progesterone personally - I take it as well and there are no downsides apart from it being annoying to have to remember to insert every day. The benefits are high though, especially the peace of mind, and it won't do anything negative if it turns out you don't need it. Good luck!

Thank you both for replying :) The midwife said it's safe and said you know there will always be a long list of side effects with any medication. Which I do get, doesn't mean it will happen! I'm glad the medication is worked/working for you both. How did it find best to take the medication?

I used progesterone and had the stitch just to be doubley sure. Taking progesterone helped me feel a bit more relaxed for some reason. No side effects so won't hurt? Just to clarify I had to have the stitch as lost a baby at 21 weeks due to cervical incompetence, I was not taking any chances with my next pregnancy!

So sorry to hear that. Thank you for posting, I agree it will put minds at ease!

Sorry, didn't want to make it into a sob story. But I genuinely feel the progesterone helped on many levels. Best of luck!!

I think I replied previously on another post? But I had the progesterone from 23 weeks until 36 weeks, and I was absolutely fine, my DD is now 6. It's used to help the pregnancy. I was one of those who's shortened significantly in just a week
