Plus Size Pregnancy

Hello all!

I'm in the very early stages (4/5weeks) but already dreading the conversations based around my weight.

I've recently lost 2.5st before we fell pregnant, now weighing In at 16st6lb but I was hoping to lose more before it happened for a healthier pregnancy. I fully intend on continuing my weight loss but I'm putting no pressure on myself.

I'm dreading the first scan thinking that because a lot of my weight is around my tummy they won't be able to do the scan properly

Are there any other plus size mums to be on here? This is my second pregnancy but I'm a few stone heavier now than I was back then!

Not plus size myself but just wanted to say congratulations and what better motivation to look after yourself than a pregnancy.
You're doing it for you and your little one!
All the best for your pregnancy journey.

In all honesty, you shouldn't really have any conversations about your weight.

It'll be mentioned at booking in, where your BMI will be noted. You'll be under consultant led care (depending on BMI - I think it's over 35).
It'll be mentioned in your scan notes but shouldn't be a problem - fair warning if you have a bit of an overhung on your tummy they will scan under the hanging bit so you might have to hold up your tummy (if that makes sense).

Honestly just go into it without shame. Your weight is your weight, don't shy away from it, don't be offended if it's mentioned and you'll barely notice an issue.

Congrats on the pregnancy :D

Congratulations ! I had two plus sized pregnancies without problems. Scans were fine , the fat doesn't get in the way at all. The machine sees through it and focusses on the uterus, it won't be a problem.

Enjoy your pregnancy , you're going to love being a mum !

My BMI was about 34 on booking. The midwife said to me that I might have to have some extra scans because of that but I never did. I’m also late 30s and was initially told I’d need to be consultant led because of my age but they then decided that also wasn’t the case so I’ve been midwife led all the way. Scans have all been fine, sonographers have never mentioned it or put anything in my notes so if my weight was a problem they didn’t say so. I did have to have gestational diabetes test at 28 weeks but that came back negative and that’s pretty much the sum total of weight related matters with this pregnancy. I was quite a bit slimmer when I was pregnant with my son and beyond what I’ve mentioned above it’s been exactly the same. I made sure I had all my vaccines though because being overweight has made me a much higher risk for stuff like covid etc etc.

I would echo what stackhead said above.

Good luck with your pregnancy Smile
