36 weeks back to back and moved up

Hi, had my 36 week antenatal appointment today. baby was quite low down in my pelvis at both previous appointments. Midwife was shocked to find he’s now quite “free” in my pelvis, and has turned back to back! What is going on?! Why was he getting ready and has now changed his mind? How do I get him back down and turned? Midwife mentioned getting a birthing ball but that’s all. Anyone had back to back labours? How was that? Just so I can prepare in case he doesn’t turn Confused

Is it your first or second? This type of movement is quite common in second pregnancies as everything is a bit more stretched from the first pregnancy. Bouncing and rotating your hips on a birthing ball would help, as would walking, trying to ensure you don't slouch back into chairs, walking and staying generally active, and swimming. Also, look at Spinning Babies advice: www.spinningbabies.com/pregnancy-birth/baby-position/posterior/

My first was back to back when I went into labour. He turned before he was born, but it definitely slowed down the whole thing.

@Welshcake15 it’s my first baby. Have you had multiple children? If so was the back to back more painful?

I'm currently pregnant with my second, so nothing to compare it to, sorry. I didn't find the contractions unbearable, and they weren't just all in my back like you hear about. I did find that when I was having a contraction I couldn't bear to be led down at all and had to be on my feet/all fours. There's plenty of time for your baby to move into a different position and engage, so try the different methods to see if that helps.

My first was back to back - never again!!!
Second was normal - i said i would happily do that labour again!

So yes, definitely do all you can to turn the baby lol

My third was back to back and my largest child also...extremely difficult labour, long and excruciating......also tore me inside which caused no end of health issues for me.....insist on a section

Both of mine were back to back.
I hear contractions are like having period pains that get gradually worse my pain was completely all in my back no period type pain at all. I can't compare as only had back to back but like any labour it was painful haha. Altho they were both very quick first born 5 hours from start to finish 2 born 1 hour 30 mins start to finish.I thought baby could move and become engaged then out untill 38/39 weeks that's what I was told so still time for him to change position.

I would get as much advice as possible on the best way to ore-empt problems. A C Section may be best.

Aphrodite31 · 21/01/2022 00:29

Sorry, pre-empt.

I had a shockingly traumatic delivery with my first child, who was back to back. He was basically stuck. I always wished I'd had a C section before he was anywhere near being stuck.

Thanks for the replies! Is it not too late to request a section?

Get on your ball and all 4s, gravity is your friend here so no slouching on the sofa. I had this at 36 weeks also (my first baby was back to back and took 4 hours of pushing to get her out so I was adamant I needed to get this baby turned!). I had a growth scan a couple of days later for other reasons and they said he had turned back. Had him 10 days later (wasn't back to back) - only 2 pushes this time to get him out, just shows how much the positioning can alter labour.

CherylPorter350 · 21/01/2022 16:17

My middle, and heaviest child, was back to back. Her head never engaged till after I was induced...at 41+6.

I was told to get on all 4s and scrub the skirting to encourage her to move lol.

I found it more comfortable to give birth on all 4s but my labour was quick, painful but I wouldn't say any more so than my other labour's
