Bleeding @ 12 weeks - how common is it? (Positive stories please)

I'm 12 weeks pregnant. I woke up at 1:30 am the other night with a small gush (1tsp or less) of smooth, liquidy pinky-red blood. Obviously though it was a miscarriage. Rushed to the emergency doctor asap in the morning and scans showed all was good and the bean was kicking about in there having a great time. The doctor could find nothing wrong and no cause for a bleed. We had had sex 12 hours before so that is the most likely cause.

Neither the emergency gynecologist nor my GP seem concerned. I still have some pinky discharge 24 hours on, but no further bleeding.

If you go on the NHS website it says bleeding in pregnancy is uncommon and bad. But then half of the female medical staff I've met in the past day tell me about how they bled in pregnancy and how common it is. Many friends say the same. My question is, have others experienced this kind of thing? Is light bleeding actually quite a common thing in pregnancy and just another underrepresented pregnancy thing?

I had bleeding, cramps and clots at around the stage you are at. All was fine and baby was born healthy. They didn’t find a cause for mine. Good luck x

A small bleed, with an obvious cause (the intercourse beforehand) is not a huge cause for concern. Pregnancy hormones can increase blood flow to the cervix and make it much more easily irritated. As you've had a good scan since, I'd try not to worry. In the absence of continued bleeding and painful cramps, most likely everything is just fine.

I bled loads in pregnancy.

With my first I bled pretty much the whole way through the first trimester and again big bleeds at 27 weeks and during labour. That baby is now almost 5.

With my second I had big bleeds at 6 and 9 weeks plus a few spots here and there in the first trimester.

I had a subchoronic haematoma (sp?) with both and I also have a cervical ectropion. Both of which caused the bleeding. With number 2 I wasn't allowed any sex and minimal interval investigations because of the ectropion. That baby is almost 3.

I think I'm just one of those who bleeds a lot

I lightly bled on nd off from 7-12 weeks, DD is now 14

babyboybluewithnumbertwox · 18/01/2022 11:27

Had bright/fresh blood at 13 weeks and it was a Hematoma (6cm). Resolved by 18 weeks and no bleeding ever since.

It is terrifying seeing blood at any stage, however, it doesn't always mean a bad outcome.

I had the same anytime had sex, cervix is quite sensitive so sex can irritate it, was told it's normal

CycleGirl20 · 18/01/2022 12:18

Thanks everyone! It sounds quite common. I'm hoping it doesn't happen again but I guess we'll see. I was expecting coming up to the second trimester to start easing off in terms of things to worry about 😅

I thought the bleeding had stopped after Monday/Tuesday but last night I woke up for a loo trip and wiped a splodge of brownish blood (just blood, no clots, only a small amount). I've since had 2 scans, the first being at the emergency room and the second my 12 week & nuchal check. All normal. Baby was squirming about with a good heartbeat (and a normal sized neck).

Fingers crossed it should be fine but it's certainly disconcerting to bleed. It's quite strange as well suddenly at 12/13 weeks having never had it before.

I had a huge bleed with my 5th whilst being scanned at 12wks. It was a private scan because the NHS couldn't get nuchal measurements and didn't offer a rescan just a quad test.

I felt something go and thought I'd weed myself and was thinking how will I style this out. She sent me to the toilet and as I got off the bed she said "you're bleeding" I'd bled through my clothes and onto the bed.

I went to the toilet and passed a large clot and went back to her convinced I had lost the baby. She rescanned and baby was there, totally unphased. I bled heavily for the rest of that day, I'd gone alone due to covid and so drove back alone in shock.

I was rescanned again 4 days later and all was OK, she said I had two small subchrionic haematoma.

I continued to bleeding brown blood for a good few weeks.

My MW were sympathetic but did nothing really just said oh you've been scanned, if it worsens go to A&E if not we will speak to you at 16wks.

Anyway she's now 7m. Still pretty chilled out about stuff, but honestly I was very anxious and didn't even announce to family til I was 24wks.

Good luck

That sounds really scary @BurningBenches! I'm glad she's ok.

They don't think I have a hemorrhage. Two doctors have seen no reason for it on the scan. I was looking forward to being post-12-weeks so I could feel a little more relaxed and my body sprung this on me!

Was just about to start a similar thread OP, it's good to hear some positive stories, I'm 10 weeks and had a bleed yesterday, literally a few hrs after a private scan where all looked ok! Hospital aren't interested in seeing me over the weekend unless huge blood loss so I'm (stupidly) scouring the internet and Mumsnet for positive stories! Fingers crossed for you and your little one.

Applesandpears23 · 22/01/2022 12:04

I had a small bleed in the first trimester and all was fine, baby is now 7 years old. My mother bled during 1 of her pregnancies and my sister was fine. Try not to worry.

Gelpennen · 22/01/2022 12:04

Hi OP, I had no bleeding until 12 weeks, then very small amounts like you’ve described. I then had it on and off for the rest of the pregnancy, it was cervical ectropion like the PP. a bit scary at first but nothing to worry about. Hopefully you’re finding the scans reassuring

cdmum9 · 24/01/2022 17:40

Hiya, sake over here had some light pink spotting in wiping and on wiping at about 8 weeks then again at 11 weeks. went for a scan and i was actually 12 weeks according to scan and had a happy bouncy baby no reason for the bleeding. Anxious after a miscarriage last year.xx

beansprout55 · 24/01/2022 18:10

Hi Op,
I'm 18 weeks and I had spotting on and off from 6 weeks to 14 weeks, 3 week break and had more last week. Pink, red, brown.... and cramps!

No reason for it on the many many scans I demanded. Spent the entire 1st trimester crying. I've come to learn how common it is!! Take heart xx

aibusux2u · 24/01/2022 18:13

I had spotting like this with all 4 of my successful pregnancies. As others have said, there is more blood flow to the cervix, so things like sex or even straining for a bowel movement can cause tiny bleeds. You should be reassured that the scans have been fine.

The one time I did miscarry I had no bleeding and it was found incidentally via u/s.

Good luck!
