If I had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy what should I expect second time?

Hi all.
It’s very early days but I’ve found out this week that we’re pregnant with our second child Smile. Our DS is 3 in March.
I had preeclampsia when I was pregnant with DS but I didn’t develop it until quite late on at 39 weeks but by the time it was discovered I was rather poorly and was induced the day it was discovered. The pregnancy had been so smooth up until that point. The preeclampsia also caused quite severe anaemia (so the doctors said, I’m not sure if there’s a link between the two) and I ended up having three blood transfusions.
I am worried about getting preeclampsia this time around. I wondered did anyone who had it with their first pregnancy get it the second time around? How did your pregnancy differ, did you get checked more regularly? I’m assuming I’ll be consultant led instead of midwife led this time. I’m just wondering what to expect.
Thanks 😊

I'm 31weeks in my 3rd pregnancy after having preeclampsia in my second. Also late on like you. So far I've had a consultant appointment at my 12 week scan. Prescribed daily aspirin. Fortnightly midwife appointments from 28weeks. A second consultant appointment at 32 weeks so I might get more info then.
I'm also checking my blood pressure regularly at home. I haven't been advised to do that but helps as it's been normal so far.
Good luck with your pregnancy.

I was told I had a roughly 1/8 chance of developing preeclampsia in a second pregnancy, and then a 1/8 chance of it being as bad as it was the first time. Mine was picked up at 37 weeks and, like PP, I was already pretty poorly and induced within an hour or so, followed by EMCS.

I expect they'll monitor you closely. Maybe keep an eye on your blood pressure at home if you can.

I had it on my first, diagnosed at 36 weeks, emcs at 36+6. Didn't have it on second or third pregnancies, no extra care at all.

I had more regular and careful monitoring but I think that had a lot to do with the previous PE not being spotted until I and ds nearly died. As it happens 2nd pregnancy was completely fine.

Thanks everyone :) that’s put my mind at rest a bit!

I had pre-eclampsia with my first. Picked up at 36 weeks. Had the protein, high BP and bloods, but was otherwise fine. Induced at 37 weeks.

Still pregnant (30 weeks) with second, but no signs so far of pre-eclampsia reoccurring. By this point, BP was already on an upward trend, so fingers crossed. Consultant said there's about 1/5 chance of it happening again. Had one appointment, now I'm effectively discharged from further consultant care unless BP goes wonky again.

As with others have said they're getting extra appointments. In effect I'm being treated the same as I would a FTM. I'm also on 150mg aspirin once a day for the duration of pregnancy.

Severe pre-eclampsia can cause what's called HELLP syndrome, a characteristic of which is haemolysis, which may have caused your anaemia. If it wasn't that, then the two probably weren't connected.

Best of luck with your pregnancy.

I had quite serious PE towards the end of pregnancy no.1 and was induced at 38 weeks.

Pregnancy no.2 was fine... BP started to climb towards the end but not enough to alarm anyone. Spontaneous labour at 39 weeks.
