Extra scans due to previous small baby?

Extra scans due to previous small baby?

Hi all. I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant with #2. At my booking appointment I was told I was low risk (normal BMI, don't smoke, no health conditions ect). However, yesterday I received a letter stating that I will be receiving extra scans every four weeks from 28 weeks. These letters didn't say why so I rang the hospital who confirmed this was due to previous baby being small for gestational age.

Indeed, my daughter was pretty dinky (born at 41 weeks but only weighed 6lbs 6oz). Perfectly healthy and now an average sized almost three year old, but still small. The midwife at the time commented that she was a little smaller than expected but aside from that nothing has been mentioned. Obviously I'm happy they're on the ball and looking forward to seeing baby more, but this is a bit of a bolt out of the blue!

Did anyone else experience this? What happened? Was your next baby also small?

Thank you ☺️

Yes. DS was 6lb 5 oz at 40+5 (even though I was measuring big at the midwife appts 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Had extra scans for DD. She was measuring small but still growing at all the scans. They didn't find anything concerning. Born 40+4 at 6lb 12oz, guess I just have little babies!

Yes. DC1 was born at nearly 42 weeks and was 2995g.

Yes I’m having extra monitoring for this reason.

Same here having extra monitoring but better that way than not

Thank you all. I had my 16 week midwife appointment yesterday and have now also been told I'll need to take aspirin. Apparently it helps improve blood flow to baby which may help them grow?

Hey OP, I had exactly the same as you. First baby born at 39 but just over 5lb (perfect in every way though).

I also had scans and took aspirin with baby 2. It was quite nice to have that constant reassurance that everything was ok. My second stayed on the same growth centile (whereas my first started to drop around 28 weeks).

Am just looking now at my 2 day old second baby born at 39 again but a much bigger 7.5lb.

I didn't take aspirin last time or have so many extra scans, so who knows if it helped!

I had this with DC3 as DC2 was born early weighing 5lb. Had scans to check he wasn't too small. Then I developed diabetes so they started scanning to check he wasn't too big! In the end he was born a perfectly normal 6lb 5oz.

@LeedleLee i took asprin during my pregnancy with my DD as at my 12w scan it was identified that the blood flow through the cord wasn't good, which can be a cause of SGA babies. She was 5lbs 12oz when she was born at 38w. I believe its fairly standard now. Good luck with this pregnancy! Flowers

Yes, although my scans were every week from 28 weeks. I also had to take aspirin too. I felt it was a good thing my baby was being monitored so often, although I remember it was slightly worrying at the time. With subsequent pregnancies I had extra scans every 4 weeks. The hospital sound on the ball to me.

Glad Iv seen this thread. I only found out yesterday im pregnant with my second and my first was induced at 37+4 due to SGA and was 5lb 3oz. Hope I get extra scans this time too.
