What size baby grows/vests go pack in hospital bag?

Due our second baby in 10 weeks, I went for my most recent growth scan today and baby is steady on his line and hasn’t dipped any further so I’m starting to think about what size baby grows we might need.. but I have no idea! My first needed premature clothes and even they were too big so Ive no clue where to head. Newborn sound like they’re going to be too big, but what’s before that.. is it tiny baby or first size? Im so confused! 😂

If it makes any difference I’m 30 weeks and baby is 3lbs so far! 🥰

I would just take newborn.
If they are smaller you can just roll up sleeves and baggy feet. If larger they still usually squeeze in.
Ds was 8lb8 and didn’t really fit in newborn long, but was still fine for the two days in hospital. Once home we used a mix of newborn and 1 month plus

Definitely pack tiny baby and first size, maybe even a few of the prem outfits if you still have any left over as scans and measurements are notoriously inaccurate. I've honestly only ever seen a handful of newborns who don't look absolutely swamped when wearing a newborn sleepsuit.

Check the sizing when you buy as some places use tiny baby and first size as interchangeable so the name isn't any help but the size of the actual sleepsuit will give you a better idea.

Our son was 8lb 10 when born and newborn were still big for him! I packed bigger but didn't use them at all 😊

Caspianberg · 11/01/2022 19:02

Newborn is generally 50cm

Ds was 53cm born, hence the newborn being pretty tight. I’m only 5’5, so didn’t expect a giant baby.

Bonnealle · 11/01/2022 19:06

Newborn is fine, they’ll be a bit big, but the baby won’t mind! They’ll soon grow, so I wouldn’t waste money on something they’ll only be in for a week. They will also be wearing a long sleeved vest underneath so that will pad it out.

I found the 'upto one month ' size worked best when my son was born. The newborn size was far so small on his long feet! He was 7lb9 so not a big baby , just rather long !

I was expecting a big baby as they told me in all my scans I was having a big baby! He was born 1 day before due date . I was even put on 'the big baby trial '

EekThreek · 11/01/2022 21:01

My first 2 were both 9lb born. #1 wore newborn size for a month, #2 was straight into 0-3 months because of body length.

Packed 0-3 for #3, ended up wearing newborn size for about 10 weeks!

Can't bloody win with babies, they're far too unpredictable Grin

Tiny baby sleepsuits x 3, vests x 3 and hats x 2
Newborn sleepsuits x 3, vests x 3 and hats x 2
0-3 months sleepsuits x 3, vests x 3 and hats x 2
All in 3 ziplock bags labelled with the different sizes so that the outfits are ready to go.
We did this with our first and will be doing it again in a couple of months with our second.

Somerandomgirl · 11/01/2022 21:37

Even worse, different shops clothes for same months are different size 🤣 take couple of every size 🤣 ive no idea what to pack either ..and with it being winter-ish baby.... even more layers to worry about 🤣

Are you me? Grin I also did this. The midwife was very grateful at 3am when baby was sick all down themselves and I was still immobile from CS and I just handed her a ziplock bag labelled with size with a full outfit in it.
MrsTimRiggins · 11/01/2022 21:59

I only took 0-3 months which worked out well given I had a 9lb 8oz, long baby!
I think the idea of labelled ziplock bags is great tho, do that!

Dollywilde · 11/01/2022 22:04

DD was 9lb and we had a mix of newborn and 0-3 months. To be honest I found the sizing really inconsistent, there were some 0-3 month baby grows that were narrower than newborn but longer, some newborn bits that were wider than 0-3 but shorter!

Have just started sorting hospital bag for DS and I’m going to just take a selection of newborn and some of the smaller 0-3. We don’t have any first size/tiny baby but as someone pointed out to me, if it’s a bit big it doesn’t really matter, it’s not like baby’s going to be tripping over the legs when they go for a walk Grin

LakeShoreD · 11/01/2022 22:06

My first was 7 and bit pounds, newborn was perfect, 6 sleepsuits and vests for a 3 night stay were more than enough. My second was just over 8lbs despite the many scans saying he’d be max 7, the newborn stuff didn’t fit so had to send DH home for the 0-3, he was mucusy and refluxy so had to send DH back out for more, twice.

NoNameIdeas · 11/01/2022 22:10

Another ziplock bag fan! They were perfect as I had an emergency c-section during Covid so no husband allowed in the ward etc. Everything in labelled bags made life so much easier, I did it for both mine and the baby's things! Hope all goes well.

gogohm · 11/01/2022 22:19

New born usually fit, we were given a preemie one as dd was unexpectedly small

UltraVividLament · 11/01/2022 22:27

I'd probably just take newborn stuff, with maybe one smaller set. My second DS arrived unexpectedly at 37 weeks and I didn't have a hospital bag packed at that point - he was dressed entirely in hospital provided clothes until my DP could get home to bring in our own stuff.

Spreadingtheword · 11/01/2022 22:28

Oh thanks for tip on ziplock bags, last time DP ended up rummaging through everything and eventually mine and babies stuff got mixed together and was a total nightmare so that’s a handy tip that I will definitely take on board!

I think I’ll probably take some tiny baby, if he’s anything like DD tiny baby and Orem absolutely swamped her and was ridiculous; only 5ft and DP relatively short too so I don’t expect to have a huge baby by any means. So I think tiny baby, first size and new born will tide us over nicely by the sounds of it!

Thanks for all the helpful comments!🥰🥰

Seriously? I think this is insanely OTT! 6 hats?! We took maybe 1 and didn't even use that both times as the hospital gave us one. I also don't understand the need for full outfits in a bag as it's not always the whole outfit that needs changed. Why would you need a new hat if they are sick down themselves?

My babies were around 7lb 10 and newborn/first size (I think they're the same, just different names depending on the shop? Tiny baby is smaller) were absolutely fine but only fitted for a couple of weeks. I took one up to 1m sleepsuit in case of a big baby but didn't need it. I wouldn't imagine most babies would fit the Tiny Baby size and certainly wouldn't bother buying it (for any new mums reading this) unless you suspected for some reason you were going to have a small baby. The people I know with babies under about 6lb just had their husbands bring smaller clothes when they could.

Flutterby8 · 11/01/2022 23:18

My baby was 6lb9oz and newborn and tiny baby were huge on her to begin with! Shes only just moved into 0-3months at 6 weeks old!
I would say take a selection of newborn clothes and maybe 2 outfits of 0-3months in case baby has very long legs!

I made up sets of clothes in ziplock bags. So i had a vest, sleepsuit, hat, mitts (if needed) and a nappy in each bag and wrote the size on it with a sharpie pen.
This was SO helpful when it came to changing her as I could just grab a bag and go. No faffing about looking for stuff in a case.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 11/01/2022 23:23

I'm struggling with this too. My first was 7lbs but tiny baby was too big on her. This one is much bigger so I'm thinking maybe just take newborn and hope for the best.
