Zip vs poppers sleepsuits

Hi everyone, this is such a mundane question but I'm pregnant with my first and just wondering if anyone has really strong views on whether zips on babygrows/sleepsuits make a huge difference compared to poppers?

I've had a few friends recommend zips as being easier for nappy changes, especially in the night. But I'm looking online and see far fewer options with zips than with poppers.

Also whether inbuilt scratch mitts are dealbreakers? I've seen lots of sleepsuits without them which has put me off buying, but if you had to choose between a sleep suit with a zip and no scratch mitts or one with poppers and scratch mitts which would you go for?

Definitely overthinking it but would love to hear anyone's views on these! Thanks!

zip 100%. Especially when they are older and there are loads of poppers

Poppers so you can keep the top ones five up you only open the leg part. Zips have to go all the way down and you end up with a naked baby at nappy change time which isn't great at night when your trying to do a discreet nappy change 😊 xx

Babies will generally have a bodysuit under the babygro so no naked babies

Another vote for Bonds Wondersuits here! I only discovered them when my LO was about 6 months old and wished I’d had them in the early days when you’re sleep deprived at 3am and the thought of doing up a popper fills you with dread!!

Wondersuits have a two way zip so you can do nappy changes easily, they’ve also got built in hand and foot cuffs which you just flip over if needed. I really liked the feet as my LO was long and grew fast!

There are lots of U.K. retailers now too so you don’t have to wait weeks for a delivery from Oz. Try www.theglobetotters.co.uk/product-category/wondersuits/

Currently 28 weeks with baby no2 and am stocking up on zip suits!

Zips

As for scratch mits you can put little socks on their hands.

If I went through the baby stage again, the only thing I would ever dress them in would be Bonds wondersuits. They are zip up, but have two zips so you can zip open from the leg to change a nappy and keep their upper half covered. They also have inbuilt fold over scratch mitts and foot covers. They have real cute designs too.

Not sure if you can get them in UK?

DropYourSword · 13/01/2022 11:12

Sorry, clearly didn’t read the thread and see they’ve already been recommended!!

You can catch skin in a zip so be mindful of that. Don't want a 'theres something about mary' moment!

Mind you I once accidentally poppered my dd's thigh too so that can happen in a bleary night with a kicking child.

I have some bonds and Mori ones but they're pricy. I got some Little Dinkers also and they seem good www.littledinkers.co.uk/product-page/stegosnorus

They have a double zip to you can just undo the leg bits for a nappy change

DappledThings · 13/01/2022 13:28

If I had another baby I'd use neither. I'd go for two piece pyjamas for night and vests/tops/dungarees/light joggers for day from day 1.

I found the poppers on sleepsuits a total pain. Zips a little better but trousers to slip on an off much easier. I could never find pyjamas smaller than about 6 months a few years ago but they seem to be around now.

JustWonderingIfYou · 13/01/2022 13:31

No need for scratch mitts, just keep nails short and filed smooth. They can delay them finding their hands and stop a lot of sensory input fro their fingertips.

Poppers/zips both good. Either for a newborn- they aren't really wriggly enough for it to be an issue. Once they start rolling around whilst you're trying to do up poppers you'll start to appreciate zips.

Whydoyoucareaboutthis · 13/01/2022 13:34

Best is vests with poppers, not over the head vests, for poo accidents.

Rno3gfr · 13/01/2022 13:41

I always thought the built in scratch mits were brilliant. The ones from Next were really good quality, although a little on the long side in size. If I had another baby then I’ll definitely be buying my babygrows from Next. The poppers aren’t too bad while their newborns but zoos are easier when they get older and start to wriggle like crazy.

Oldnews · 13/01/2022 13:52

I bought all of my zip suits from new zealand where they are common, all have double zips. I never used the scratch mits, but the bonds ones were the best as you could also used the mits and feet bits to lengthen the arms and legs and get more use out of them.

Theforest · 13/01/2022 13:55

Another vote for poppers and built in scratch mitts when little. Separate ones fall off. Socks work better!! Although looks a little odd 😂

Giggleswickx · 03/03/2022 15:50

Baby nightgowns are good for night changes. I've seen some lovely prints on the Piccalilly website x

FurBabyMum02 · 03/03/2022 16:42

For tinies poppers so you can only undo the bottom half for nappy changes. Once they are wriggly little monkeys zips all the way. Though we only have a couple of zip ones so I tend to save them for faster changes at swimming.

Bells3032 · 03/03/2022 18:14

My little one is ten weeks old but 6 weeks premature and couldn't get zipped ones til she was newborn size which she reached 2 weeks ago and omg are they a game changer. She's a very wriggly baby and trying to get popped done up at 2am or in the doctors office etc with time pressure was a nightmare. Much prefer zips. Just bought a load of them from George for 0-3 months for when she moves into that size.

Bells3032 · 03/03/2022 18:15

Oh and scratch mitts is a personal thing though found virtually all newborn stuff had them built in. However mine hated them and screamed every time I put them on so...

NoodleSlurper · 03/03/2022 18:46

Poppers for all of mine. My DC were extremely chubby and were too wide for zip suits way before they were too long for them. The popper ones just gaped a bit. I needed footed suits except in summer because socks never stayed on (Baby Gap were best at the time but not totally babyproof).

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 03/03/2022 22:20

In my opinion the only advantage to the zip is if it is a two way one...otherwise baby is virtually undressed each nappy change.

I'd 100% go for scratch kits (we don't use them often, but I'd rather have the option). I personally don't mind the poppers....I do however dislike the ones with poppers that only go down one leg - they look cute, but can be awkward once they are a snuggee fit. I'd advise you to buy the baby grows you like and once you use them you'll see what you do and don't like

madeleine85 · 03/03/2022 22:25

Poppers are ok in the early days, as they get bigger and wriggly zips are much better. The poppers are also annoying through the night, so zips are easier then. There is a brand from an ozzie company called the Bonds Wondersuit, they have fantastic onesies with fold over feet as well as mittens for hands, so you don't have to fuss with socks! Highly recommend them. They ship for free and usually have a deal going/you can find them on Amazon. There is another genius option called Magnetic Me onesies, and they use magnets. My husband loved them, even if they were extortionate.
