Two cold drinks and no movement

Hi guys, I've been feeling what I think might have been baby very sporadically over the past week or so. I'm currently 20 weeks. But today I've tried the "cold drink trick" twice. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon and have felt nothing. My scan is in 2 days, but I'm starting to lose hope right now. Would it be worth calling anyone?

I don't think there is any point calling anyone so early on. I wouldn't worry though. If you've been feeling movement sporadically so far it is most likely the baby has just moved into a position you can't feel so well. Hopefully the scan will reassure you.

I didnt deel my daughter move until 21 weeks.

Definitely do go to hospital when ypu notice a change in their movement, but at this stage they havent established any pattern, and cold drinks may not do anything.

Lils11 · 09/01/2022 13:57

I didn't feel anything until almost 24 weeks. Do you know where your placenta is? That can cushion an awful lot of the kicking.

Derbee · 09/01/2022 14:16

I didn’t feel anything until 24 weeks. Even then, I had days when I didn’t feel anything for a full day at a time.

astoundedgoat · 09/01/2022 14:28

It's so difficult at that stage because their movements are really hard to identify - you're still learning what it feels like. It's more like tiny bubbles popping and you wouldn't necessarily notice the tiny sensations at all if you were doing something stepping into the shower or just moving around generally. Your own size as well as the placement of the placenta can "muffle" the feeling too until the baby is bigger.

I fully get how it's worrying though. The midwife at your GP might let you come in tomorrow morning for a quick doppler to put your mind at rest?

Is your 20 week scan on Tuesday?

Furmummy · 09/01/2022 14:38

Snap I could have written that, my scan is this week too and feel really anxious. Trying to keep my mind busy as much as possible and hold off till the appointment -it’s so hard though xx

ThatScottishLass · 09/01/2022 14:41

I remember calling the doctor around then because I hadn't felt her move in a couple of days and she basically laughed at me as they're still so small that if they change position then you can't feel them anymore. My daughter was born at 37 weeks, perfectly healthy. She's now 14 months. Deep breaths, you're probably fine!

AgathaMystery · 09/01/2022 14:43

You’re very early in your pregnancy to feel regular, discernible movements but, more importantly, the ‘cold drink ‘ ‘sugary drink’ trick is not to be trusted or relied upon. When you’re pregnancy is move advanced - healthy babies move without prompting Having to nudge a baby with drinks etc is a red flag in later pregnancy.

Lu2021 · 09/01/2022 14:57

I agree that at 20 weeks it might be a bit difficult to tell. As other posters, I was told to wait until 24 weeks, but even then I was not able to feel any movements due to the location of the placenta.
If you need to feel reassured, just call your maternity assessment unit. They were fantastic with me.

Missnicolinda96 · 09/01/2022 14:57

My placenta is at the back, which is why I'm worried Sad. Hoping I feel something later.

I didn’t feel baby move until 20 weeks and up to 28 weeks it’s been very sporadic, a couple days of constant strong movements and then a couple days of barely anything. It’s scary when there’s nothing and you should contact someone if you really feel that something is wrong, but 20 weeks is early to feel consistent movements as they’re so small still.

Dresslover1950s · 09/01/2022 15:09

Can’t you go to the unit at the hospital And get monitored? It would put your mind at ease have you tried a fizzy drink and lying on one side? A bath I was a bag of nerves having my son so I can understand

Ohisitreally · 09/01/2022 15:17

If you are worried call your local maternity unit and you can get monitoring done. It is more likely to be that it is still early days for regular movement but I would still give them a call.

WakeUpLockie · 09/01/2022 15:18

I doubt they’ll monitor you at this stage, I went in this week at 26+4 and they just listened to heartbeat, and did obs, no monitoring. I was surprised but think in previous pregnancies any monitoring I had was much later. Took them 5 mins to find the heartbeat but all ok apparently!!

WakeUpLockie · 09/01/2022 15:20

Oops, lost half my message! Was just saying that it’s too early for the cold drink trick I think, they’re so small and not guaranteed to be near your stomach to feel the cold I think 😄 I’m 27 weeks and now is when you count the kicks and notice a pattern. Agree the second trimester is anxiety making!

LS2020 · 09/01/2022 19:22

@Missnicolinda96 I’m currently 22.5 weeks, placenta on back and have been feeling baby since about 18 weeks getting more frequent and stronger. Around a week or so ago, I had a very similar day, felt absolutely nothing and was confused as by that point they weren’t strong but normally felt them 2/3 times a day. Tried normal chocolate etc and didn’t work. Must have just turned around or something as I woke up at 3am to pee and they were having a little party and they’ve not let up since! They’ve got a lot of room in there at the minute so they’re just busy kicking somewhere else. I would suggest seeing if you get anything tomorrow and if not, consider ringing then 😊

SGChome20 · 09/01/2022 19:45

If you were 30 weeks I'd be telling you to phone triage but that early on you don't have to worry.

Flowerbug1994 · 09/01/2022 20:59

Hi am 18 weeks and have felt movements from 26 with a placenta at the back. At 17 weeks I didn’t feel movement for about 3 days. It just so fell that last week I had first phone appointment with my consultant and asked her about it she was so so lovely she said not to worry at this point they are still very little to feel. She said that movements are monitored from about 24 weeks on she said from that point don’t hesitate to get in touch with movement worries. She was not concerned at all that I hadn’t felt nothing for 2 days. Also ironically since I spoke to her Ive had more movements. I felt like my whole stomach was turned today.

Dresslover1950s · 11/01/2022 11:58

Hope everything’s ok op

NewtoHolland · 11/01/2022 12:25

I didn't feel either of my first two move till around 22-23 weeks, you're not really at the worrying about frequent movements stage of pregnancy yet :). But if you're otherwise worried about things not being OK you could speak to your midwife or maternity triage. Here is some evidence based Info www.rcog.org.uk/en/patients/patient-leaflets/your-babys-movements-in-pregnancy/

Rej92 · 11/01/2022 14:36

Hi, I’m also 20 weeks, have posterior placenta so felt bubble type movement from a couple of weeks ago and in the last week Or so a few defined kicks in the evenings and in the day when sat at my desk, however they’d be evening when I didn’t feel anything.
This is my first pregnancy so had been anxious if it had been a little while but had a 20 week scan this morning and all was well, baby moving lots on the scan but I couldn’t feel it so goes to show they can be a right fidget but you may not feel everything.
Hope that helps to reassure a bit 😊
