Glass of wine to start labour?

Hello. I have been told that an idea to kick start labour is to have a glass of wine.

I am a bit wary of it, as I have not had a single alcholic drink since finding out about the pregnancy. However, I am overdue, and quite desperate to have this baby!

I am also not keen on wine, but can bare it if needed - is it just wine?

Would you do this? Do you think it is safe?

Oh and also, if you would do it, how often would you do it? Assuming it doesn't work the first time?

What are the safe limits to drinking while pregnant? I was happy to go completly without, so wouldn't know!

Tried the spicy food and the sex! Still trying but nothing so far, have also tried the essential oils, evening primrose oil tablets, pineapple, massage, hot baths, you name it!

Thats why I am so desperate!

think your baby is happy where he/she is!hope you dont have much longer to wait!is it your first?

Ermm why would you want to get going with a fair chance of being in labour Xmas day?
The wine is about relaxing you, so you stop stressing about going into labour BTW!Anyway how far 'over' are you? term is 37- 42 weeks so if you're only a few days over 40 weeks, i'd relax, put your feet up and get some rest, cos you sure as hell aren't going to get much when babe arrives!
I'm presently crossing my legs until the tree comes down -I've a habit of being 'early'

It's mainly because I don't want to be induced. I have planned a home birth, which will go out the window if I don't go into labour myself.

Also got so much back pain, had several false starts, and just generally wanting to meet baby!

Sounds like stuff could be happening anyway then! you don't have to be induced you know, like i said 'term' is up to 42 weeks on average and 97% or therabouts will have delivered by 43 weeks - RCOG and NICE guidelines only say to 'offer' induction after 42 weeks - not to pressure you into hospital at 40 + 10 which seems to be what most try and do. You've got to bear in mind that any induction will only work if you're ready to labour anyway, if you aren't ready that's when the interventions get more inevitable, so you need to weigh it up. Like i said with the backaches and niggle you sound like things are moving, possibly babe is posterior and all the aches and niggles are shuffling things round the right way,so the last thing you want to do is disrupt that process

CMJ - a glass of wine won't start labour, so given that you're worried about having one and don't like wine anyway, don't bother! (To answer your question, though, one small glass of wine at this stage in your pregnancy will do no harm whatsoever.)

Some people say that a small alcoholic drink in early labour can relax you enough either for things to get going properly, or for them to slow down so you can sleep etc. But it won't get labour going from a standing start

You are winding yourself up, by the sounds of it. I know how much you want to avoid an induction but worrying about it won't make the baby arrive any earlier. Try to relax a little - I know it's easier said than done but you are barely due and you have plenty of time yet. Stressing about this will only exhaust you. Enjoy your Christmas, think positive thoughts and look forward to meeting your baby.

Oh, and forget the pineapple - it doesn't work

Hi again CMJ. A very spiritual lady I talked to when I was heavily pregnant truly believed that the baby will only come when you and the baby are ready, ie they will start to come when everything is right with you both.

If you are fretting and using up extra energy stressing, this is not the best time for the lo to make an appearance - you need to be in tip top form!

I honestly know how you feel. I wanted a hb and went overdue (40+9) so was totally stressed about having a hospitalised induction. I met a fantastic lady (as mentioned above) who was also a reflexoligist and after a session with her it felt like a weight had been lifted (she let me spill my guts about how I was feeling and just listened - and most importantly told me to have faith in my body and my baby)

After my 1st session with her, I listened to my body and had an overwhelming feeling that I would go into labour and meet my baby the following weekend. And guess what? Iwent into labour on the Sat, and met my ds on the Sunday.

Sorry for harping on, but what I guess I'm trying to say is. Take this time to relax and mentally prepare yourself for the coming days/weeks. Worrying is a waste of time and energy. DIY inductions will only work if the baby is ready.
