Morning sickness - was this different for you with different pregnancies?

Hi ladies,

I know that everyone’s different but I would like to know, if you have had more than one pregnancy, whether you had morning sickness with both?

I had pretty unbearable morning sickness with #1 to the point where I was bed ridden for 2 weeks, lost a stone during that time and ended up on a drip in hospital. I was being uncontrollably sick and struggled to make it the short distance to the bathroom to throw up (cue being sick down the stairs…on my dinner plate… it was really not nice). Had to have a sick bucket with me at all times.

Luckily it was during the first lockdown and as a teacher, I was working from home.

I’m pregnant again and terrified of the same. I’m back at work and the thought of puking whilst I am teaching a lesson fills me with dread.

Truthfully, if you had sickness with the first, was it the same with the second?

With my first I had no sickness at all, then I had HG with my next child, similar to you in that I was in hospital a few times on a drip, losing weight, off work etc., until about 30weeks.

I’m now 37 weeks pregnant with number 3, and unfortunately I’ve had HG again, and I am still suffering from it, and my midwife thinks I’ll probably be sick right up until I give birth. The main difference has been that I knew fairly early on that the sickness was really bad again, and felt much more confident to push my GP to give me medication early on, and to then request different meds when I thought it wasn’t working, rather than accepting their wait and see approach last time. My family/friends have been so helpful as they all knew how bad it was last time, so I’ve had lots of support and taken it as easy as possible.

There is a charity called Pregnancy Sickness Support who can give really excellent advice, so I would recommend speaking to them asap. Best of luck, and fingers crossed you don’t suffer from it this time.

I want to lie to you, I do truly.

I have had 8 pregnancies two have gone to full term but only one resulted in a live child.

I'm pregnant again now 30 weeks, my sickness got worse with each baby. The duration of the sickness was different though. Tended to bigger off at 14 weeks with most of them, however this one I have been sick and continue to be sick.

Echoing previous poster, use the past experience to get medication early, you know the steps you have to do if you get really unwell re IV drip at hospital.

Dont be sodding fobbed off it's hell on earth ! But magically you do tend to forget how bad it is at every birth !

Congratulations and remember it will bloody end but in mean time make sure you have the support around you.

I have 2 weeks left of my second pregnancy. My first was a doddle compared to this, I had HG up until 18 weeks in my first. With this one I'm still on anti-sickness tablets, being sick at least twice a day and the nausea is awful. I lost 3 stone (thankfully put some back on), still can't drink water or eat vegetables without throwing up.

The best thing I can say to you is don't get fobbed off, get medication early and make sure people listen to you!

With my first constant nausea but only occasional sickness. (Boy)
Number 2 - sickness multiple times daily until about 22 weeks. Admitted to hospital a few times due to dehydration. (A girl)
With number 3 I didn't even know I was pregnant until 17 weeks - no sickness at all. (Boy)
Number 4, also a boy, very occasional sickness.
Number 5 - sick throughout, even in labour. Didn't feel ill / nauseous at all, was just sick all the time! I would be on the school run, stop, be sick and then carry on! (A girl)
Number six- I was sick once through the whole pregnancy. I was convinced because of this that it would be a boy, but it was a girl!

mummyh2016 · 09/01/2022 08:48

I did have it with both however it was worse with my first (DD) and was on medication, with this pregnancy (DS) it wasn't as bad and I managed without medication.

cloverleafy · 09/01/2022 08:53

3 pregnancies.. no1 was "just" morning sickness. No2 was signed off work for a few weeks, on medication. No3 slightly worse. Sorry.

ChocolateRiver · 09/01/2022 08:56

Dc1 (boy) wasn’t too bad. Sickness lasted from around week 7 to week 16. But I did have Ofsted in that time - running a department with 7 non-specialists so that was pretty awful. With Dd 2 (girl) I had terrible sickness. I was sick every day and at all times of the day. I was sick in school many, many times. Sorry probably isn’t what you want to hear. I also had horrendous carpal tunnel syndrome too. It was truly horrific and I didn’t have a third child partly because I was so poorly with dc2.

Phone Pregnancy Sickness Support. Talk to them about getting anti sickness medications prescribed early.

You want to be on the phone to your GP, with a list of which medications you'd like to try, on the day you find out you are pregnant. You also want to have a list of which medications you would like to try next, if the first lot aren't working.

If your GP isn't helpful, go back to the support line and they will support you to get the medication you need.

adaptiveness · 09/01/2022 09:14

Sorry, I didn't specifically say, but evidence shows that starting medication early can reduce the severity of your symptoms. They won't be as effective if you wait until you are already quite sick.

A580Hojas · 09/01/2022 09:18

My all day sickness was pretty horrible and lasted throughout the full term of both pregnancies (girl and boy) but with the boy it eased off a little and I could generally eat a bit more. Carrying my girl I actually lost weight over the first 6 months.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 09/01/2022 09:23

For me a bit different but bad in each pregnancy-

Ds1 - severe sickness and nausea from 6 weeks. Near constant nausea and wasn’t able to eat much more than dry crackers. Completely went away at 16 weeks.

Ds2 - from 5 weeks. Was vomiting a lot but the nausea wasn’t as bad and I was able to eat relatively normally. Lasted longer. Mostly better by 22 weeks but had episodes of vomiting right up to the birth.

Dd1- very severe, constant nausea with some vomiting until 18 weeks. Was unable to eat much at all and was trapped in a horrible cycle of hunger setting off the nausea but being not able to eat anything because of the nausea!

RedRobyn2021 · 09/01/2022 09:26

Glad you started this thread OP I had HG with my first and ended up in hospital too at one point when I was around the 16 week mark, only my sickness went on for 25 weeks. I was so lucky that I got put on two types of anti sickness and this seemed to help me stop being sick (although the nausea persisted) It was awful. Would love another baby but don't know how I would look after my daughter at the same time, I could barely look after myself.

Fleur405 · 09/01/2022 09:27

With my first I was sick multiple times a day weeks felt sick almost the whole time until about 13 weeks. This time I think I was sick twice and have had almost no nausea. So it is possible!

miltonj · 09/01/2022 09:40

I had very similar sounding pregnancy sickness to what you describe with my first pregnancy.

Ten weeks pregnant again now and whilst I do have quite bad nausea that means I can only eat certain things and struggle massively with smells, I've only actually thrown up twice so far! So yes it can be different hold on to hope!!

SockQueen · 09/01/2022 09:47

First time I was pretty sick - didn't end up in hospital but only just, barely functioned at work. Got a bit better when I started meds and cleared up about 18 weeks.

Second time the sickness was probably less bad, but I got on meds earlier and was strict about taking them. The exhaustion was dreadful though, doing first trimester with a two year old was relentless, not helped by DH having a mental health crisis and being pretty useless for months

Flibbyjibby · 09/01/2022 11:21

Thanks for your answers so far everyone! As I thought, seems everybody’s experiences are different and I can’t really predict how this pregnancy will be.

I forgot to mention that in my previous pregnancy I was diagnosed with HG which many of you have already mentioned, and was put on a cocktail of anti-sickness medication after my hospital stay (cyclizine, prochlorperazine and metoclopramide) and I have a really nice GP who put it on my repeats without me needing to argue my case. I will definitely speak to her if I need it again this time, and I do actually have some left over which is still in date just in case I desperately need it.

It’s just the vomiting with no warning which I fear the most! :(

I'm on my second pregnancy. Sick with both but worse this time. Others I know have been the opposite though so you never know.

I agree you should get on the meds early at the first sign of sickness.

You should also take time off sick if you need to. I'm a former teacher and I know that's not an easy option, but if it's what's best for you, now's the time to put your needs ahead of the school's. There's no way I could have taught during the first trimester this time.

rainbowplease · 09/01/2022 13:23

I only had sickness with my first - all my DC are the same sex.

rainbowplease · 09/01/2022 13:25

Well I say all. I recently found out I'm pregnant quite far along, no sickness but don't know the sex yet.

candlelightsatdawn · 09/01/2022 13:30

@Flibbyjibby I was told (and I'm not sure how reliable this is as it came from my very old school GP) when I had HG the way to minimise the waves hitting you randomly and being instantly sick is to not get to hot or stay at slightly colder temp than usual.

Helpfully he told me this in the middle of a heat wave, but to be fair to him staying cold reduced did the swings of nausea a tad but didn't stop them obviously.

Good luck and I hope you miss the bullet of sickness this time around.

PotatoGoblins · 09/01/2022 13:31

I had hyperemesis with DC1. It was completely debilitating - vomiting at least 10 times a day if not more. Anything I ate or drank came back up within a few minutes. I ended up hospitalised numerous times.
When I found out I was pregnant with DC2, I cried and cried because I was terrified that the hyperemesis would come back. Luckily it didn’t! I had horrendous morning sickness for around 14/15 weeks - vomiting 3 or 4 times a day most days, but then it disappeared as quickly as it started. Was the same with DC3.

Imohsotired · 09/01/2022 13:32

I had barely any symptoms on my first two pregnancies (rib pain and tiredness was about it), was diagnosed with HG on current pregnancy. It has been quite a shock after breezing through my previous pregnancies

OliviaBond · 09/01/2022 14:01

Mine were all different. With my first I was sick a few times a week but eventually realised cheese set it off bizarrely. Second child I was only sick once or twice the whole time. Third I had hyperemesis
