I have just taken my blood pressure, and it is 140/95. I feel fine but should i be doing anything about this. Im 37+3 weeks??

contact mw and get a 'pro' to read it.
i had pre-eclampsia at 36wks, felt fine too. this is not to alarm you, just so you have an idea that it may be cause for concern, or maybe not.

get some rest now - it does wonders for the old BP. I promise.

didsnbump, I think we've chatted on another thread. Based on what you've said on that thread I do think you'd be wise to get it checked out fairly promptly.

fortyplus · 23/12/2007 22:59

Definitely get it checked out. I had pre-eclamsia and was threatened with a caesarian when bp was consistently 140 over 85. I felt fine, too - that's the danger. Are your fingers swollen at all?

gigglewitchyouamerrychristmas · 23/12/2007 23:01

It's worth comparing it with your booking-in bp in your handheld notes. what was it then? this is the difference that mw / dr will look for.

BTW, is there anyone you can get in touch with tonight, just to be safe?

didsnbump · 23/12/2007 23:27

Hi daisymoo,

yeah we did, i was thinking as its so late i will check it again in the morning and if still the same will call the mw for advise??

I don't think you're in the UK are you if I remember correctly, so I guess the set-up is different and it may not be as easy to get in touch with someone - here you can always phone delivery suit and ask for advice. I am only a doula, not a midwife, but IMO 140/95 is not a normal blood pressure reading and personally I would be wanting to at least speak to a midwife or doctor tonight to be on the safe side. I really don't want to worry you, but an increase in blood pressure can indicate pre-eclampsia which can progress very quickly and needs close attention.

No im not im based in germany, i have an on call midwife i can call but hate to ring this late at night, i have the labour ward number but i cant speak german and depending whos there depends on the level of english understood!

i think the immediate plan would be get lots of rest, now, and contact mw as early as poss tomorrow.
take care.

madamez · 23/12/2007 23:54

Do you have any of the following: headache, nausea, swelling of feet or fingers, blurred vision? If so, get medical advice IMMEDIATELY. If not, take it easy and get checked out tomorrow. I had high BP for most of the second half of my pregnancy but I generally have a higher-than-average BP which seems to be a mix of genetics and the fact that every time someone wants to measure it I immediately start flapping that it will be up and so it shoots up. BP can rise in pregnancy without doing any major harm but it is one of the early indicators of pre-eclampsia so should not be ignored.
Good luck.

didsnbump · 23/12/2007 23:58

ive just taken it again and its now 136/84 so not so bad now!

I also have slightly higher BP. It has read 151 over something else in hospital but is lower at home. Rest, speak to midwife and monitor it.

There's also the possibility that BP is higher cos you are anxious about birth (mine gets higher when i'm anxious). That's not to say that you should ignore the reading.

didsnbump · 27/12/2007 22:40

Well unfortunatly felt like poo xmas day evening with fuzzy head ache and feeling sick, so checked my blood pressure to find it to be 166/93. Called midwife who sent me to hospital, so spent xmas night and most of boxing day in hospital.

But after all of that generally my blood pressure is fine, it just goes up high at random times but doesnt remain high. They cant find anything amiss in blood or urine and baby is fine so not really sure whats going on with me.

Goodness - that is high!

I find that the best way to lower my BP when its taken in hospital is to imagine i'm floating on my back in a swimming pool with my face facing the heat of the sun.

Try visualising something like this to maybe bring your BP down a little bit. It may not bring it down a lot but it may help you to relax. I find i don't want to stop imagining i'm in the pool.
