E. coli in urine - 34 weeks pregnant

I need some help if possible!

My midwife left me a voice message at 5pm to say my urine sample from Tuesday had some growth and that I urgently need antibiotics and that she has asked 111 to give me a call to arrange it.

They've just called and said there's 3 injectable antibiotics which the midwife has requested i receive one of, but he doesn't agree with it so he's prescribed a tablet instead.

I've since googled it and it says not to use tablet based antibiotics so now I'm at a loss - no idea what to do, if I should pick the prescription up and start it or not...!

Have you had e Coli in urine in pregnancy and if so how was it treated?

It looks terrifying when you google it so I've had to stop myself! X

I'd call 111 and explain the situation. It needs doing as a matter of urgency. On what grounds did the doctor disagree with the midwife?

He said the antibiotics that's she's suggested are all injectables and completely over the top for me. I did say I'm ok with injectables as I'm currently on insulin which I inject daily but he just said your seeing your midwife on Tuesday, so take what I suggest and ask her for advice during your appointment 😐

I had this infection in the third trimester. Had oral antibiotics, no injections.
But I would be contacting a medical doctor, 111 as it is the weekend or your midwife team.

I can't really give advice over the pregnancy aspect but just to hopefully reassure you a bit. It is common for UTI's to be caused by E.coli getting into your waterworks. I agree with PP though I would want to speak with a Dr (if that's not who it was through 111) or could you call your pregnancy triage hospital and ask them for advice?

Yep I had this for 10 weeks in my pregnancy, oral antibiotics of nitrofurantoin and then a low dose of cefalexin which finally got rid. Something like 80% of UTIs are caused by E. coli it's nothing bad.

Have had similar issues progressed onto what I thought was a kidney infection and was in and out of hospital trying to get it sorted. The nitrofurintoin tablets will help - try not to worry as it’s good they have picked it up. I felt dismissed too and had to keep going back to ensure it was properly treated but I find the doctors a bit right and dismissive with antibiotics when it’s really important in pregnancy. I am sure you will be fine just stick on them and call 111 if you have concerns. They will probably send you in for assessment.
