Do I tell work yet?

Hey, so I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I went back to work January 3rd after being off on maternity leave, I only work two days a week (monday&friday).
I had to take today off work due to having an allergic reaction to something last night, being on the phone to out of hours GP at 3am and my 10 month old going through a sleep regression.
I'm due to go back to work Monday, BUT my booking in appointment with the midwife is on Monday an hour into starting work if I was there.
I don't know what to do because I feel bad letting them down again after having so much time off but at the same time I don't see the point in going to work after the appointment because by the time I get there I'll be working 5 hours and it's not worth it in my eyes (I have to travel fairly far from home to work).

I think if I call in sick I'll still get paid but I'll just be in the bad books.
I don't really want to tell them I'm pregnant again so soon because I want to at least have my 12 week scan due to previous losses.

I'm just struggling on what to do 😫

Id lie and say your baby has an appointment then go to work for the remainder of the day. I told work my little boy had an appointment to get out of telling them i had a scan appointment

Legoisaws8om · 07/01/2022 21:03

Its too late now but perhaps in future you can ask the midwife to change the appointment to your non working days just until your 12 weeks so you don't have to tell work anything. And tbh 5 hours is still worth working considering a working day is usually between 7 to 8 hours? Could you not say you need to have a gp check up related to the allergy and you'll come in as soon as that's done?

Have a medical appointment for you or your child and go to work afterwards

Findahouse21 · 07/01/2022 21:06

If you told me this, as an employer I'd want you to work your 5 hours, I can't see anyone thinking that they would excuse a whole day due to an appointment that is unlikely to be more than 60 mins at the top end.

sho22 · 08/01/2022 00:58

I see your points. I think because I have to travel quite far to get to work and I don't get paid very good money this is why I'm thinking 5 hours isn't worth it.
I'll have more of a think on it.
Thank you!

If you only work Mondays and Fridays I really think in the early days before you want to tell them you should make appointments on the 3 days you're off, you're lucky you have this time and you can't complain they'll get funny as I think they'd see it the same way

Don't want to sound mean / harsh but you have options and aren't taking them so you're making a rod for your own back

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 08/01/2022 09:18

5 hours is plenty of time to go into work. Hmm

OP doesn't mention wether or not she can get a midwife appointment on another day, but it may be that the midwife only does certain days. I know in my area booking in appointments are done on a Monday only and normal MW appointments are all on a Thursday. OP should maybe have considered booking a holiday, but she may not be able to swap the day.

@redandwhite1

The midwives booked the appointment for me, I didn't have any part in that. I tried to change the appointment and they told me they were fully booked and If I cancel I won't be seen for potentially 3-4 weeks.

I have to travel far to get to work and earn very little money, this is why I don't deem it worth going in for 5 hours. I haven't taken any traffic into account either because I have to drive on one of the busiest motorways

I work far from home, earn very little money for what I do and have to drive on one of the busiest motorways to get there. I'm not taking any traffic into account, so it could be less than 5 hours.
If I only lived 15-20 minutes down the road then 100% 5 hours is plenty of time. Hmm

How long does it take you to get to work?

How far you live from your job is not your employer’s problem and that’s what you decided when you took the job/moved to where you live.

Turning up for 5 hours shows willing to your boss and they’re less likely to be pissed off at you needed to have appointments in work time. Whilst you’re entitled to this time, there does need to be give and take if you want to progress in your career or keep your job.

Fair enough and apologies. I must be lucky as We sit there together at my appointment and pick a day & time that suits

@BeingATwatItsABingThing
On a good day with no traffic around an hour. I had no choice in moving but that's another story, ever since I moved I've been working hard to try and get a transfer but it all got put on hold due to covid.

I agree with the give and take, and I believe I've done more than enough for the company to warrant it. It's not a job I'm wanting to stay in once I've had baby.
I appreciate others opinions but I feel the emoji you put made it seem like a dig
