Grapes

Odd one ... past week I've been eating grapes almost everyday. Some instinct told me to Google if there are allowed during pregnancy, apparently it's best to stay away from them due to a toxicity?!

All the leaflets I've been given from my midwife... non stated grapes being off the card Sad love pregnancy but also exhausting .... anyone else eat grapes??

What’s the source of that?

Scirocco · 06/01/2022 23:57

Unless you're eating a ton of them, you'll be fine. Grapes are definitely not something to worry about other than the general principle of avoiding eating too much of anything in order to have a balanced diet. Just make sure you wash them before eating!

miltonj · 07/01/2022 00:07

All the worry is a nightmare at first isn't it!?

Stick to what the NHS page says re food in pregnancy but even that's cautious so can be followed loosely and according to what you feel comfortable with. You'll find a reason to not eat everything if you search online majority of it not true. They also have different rules in different countries for various reasons (such as food laws, how their food is processed or pasteurised snd how cautious or traditional a country is) so a lot of advice isn't relevant to the UK. Crack on with your grapes - they're good for you!

Agree with everyone's comments!! The worry is crazy....

@miltonj Google typically...

Grapes generate heat? “apollocradle” looks like a fantastic source of high quality scientific information. It doesn’t even look capable of constructing grammatically correct sentences.

Seriously, stick with the NHS.

DockOTheBay · 07/01/2022 12:31

Grapes are known to generate heat in the body? What like all food which contains sugar or starch? Sounds like absolute rubbish to be OP, stick to reputable sources for the very small list of foods to avoid, and eat allowed foods in moderation and you'll be fine.

DockOTheBay · 07/01/2022 12:33

It is also worth noting that even with the food which are not recommended, 99+% of people who eat them would still be absolutely fine. The risks associated with them are really tiny.

Agree. The message can feel like "if you eat sushi you will kill your baby" to new mums. Where it's more like "if you eat sushi, and it happens to be bad, the kind of sickness you could get could result in more serious consequences than it would if you weren't pregnant"
SheWoreYellow · 07/01/2022 12:36

If you google anything by you can find someone saying it’s not safe in pregnancy Smile

Known to generate heat in the body Grin

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2022 12:38

I've eaten some black/red grapes (with natural yogurt and seeds/nuts) daily for breakfast throughout my first and second trimesters - the dark ones are full of antioxidents, hence the reason many nutritionists say red wine is okay for you in moderation (although obviously no alcohol when pregnant Grin). I've only stopped now as they are higher sugar and I've been just diagnosed with GD (strong family history so it was always likely in my third trimester), but baby has been fine on all his scans so far.

The only "bad" thing I've read about grapes (other than the sugar content but still better than chocolate!) is that the Indian ayurvedic principles say they increase body heat, if you believe in that?

Somerandomgirl · 07/01/2022 12:40

I stopped looking in google...totally anything u ask if its safe it will tell u its not...i so wanted to eat watermelon in first trimester but cause stupid google i didnt!
Eat whatever you feel like! (In normal quantities...)

FelicityPike · 07/01/2022 13:19

What a pile of twaddle!
If they’re not on the NHS list then they’re fine.

Pitstop1986 · 07/01/2022 14:25

I ate tonnes of grapes in my first trimester. I just wanted to eat fruit all the time and if I had a punnet of grapes, I'd scoff the lot in one go, so DH kept buying them for me as a treat.

Just make sure you wash them before eating them

Knockon · 07/01/2022 14:29

Just commenting my amusement at that website

ExpectingLady93 · 07/01/2022 15:07

Avoid Google like the plague while pregnant and with newborn

Jellybelly888 · 02/10/2024 20:12

Maybe all the poor elderly people should eat a tonne of grapes this winter to keep warm since the government have done away with the heating allowance….

Seriously though OP, Google will send you down rabbit holes you didn’t even know existed. Stick to the NHS website and enjoy your grapes x
