Resistance in umbilical artery

Hello all,

I was told yesterday that there is a slightly increased resistance in my umbilical artery. I'm currently 30 weeks and have been asked to come on Friday again to check the blood flow. Has anyone been on the same situation? Baby's weight is in the 5th percentile. Is 30 weeks too early? And how long can the blood flow stay as it is? Is there anything I can do to improve blood flow? Any advice is highly appreciated! Thanks very much!

We're just giving this thread a bump for the OP in case anyone's around to give some advice and support.

Is it the cord resistance? I had some elevated levels through the Doppler with my eldest, but her growth scans all looked fine. I had further scans every couple of weeks and consultant had the chat about possible steroids and an early delivery, but the levels reduced and I didn’t have her until my waters went at 38+5.
At 30 weeks I suspect they’ll want to keep baby in unless there’s serious concerns.

I had this. It was flagged at my 20 week scan and I was asked to do a 28 week scan as a follow up. By then the baby's growth had plummeted down the charts and I was monitored very closely until they decided she was better off out than in at 34 weeks. She spent three weeks in nicu but did well after that.

If you are not already on blood thinners you might be asked to take them.

Hello, I was also told I had high resistance at the 20 week scan.
Had a 28 week scan and he has not grown as much as hoped so I'm now being scanned every week (30 weeks this week). As pp said, they have told me that if he carries on dropping down the centiles they may look to deliver early.
I'm taking aspirin 150mg daily. That's because there's evidence it can protect against pre-eclampsia which is also a concern when the pressure is high.

I’ve got this too. Had my 20 week scan recently. Due to age as a risk factor I’ve already got growth scans at 28,32 and 36 weeks. Will cross fingers that it resolves or makes no difference. Already taking 150mg aspirin since conception.

Hi,
The PI index measurements can be wrong. If baby moves a lot or plays with the cord it can give false results. Unfortunately it is nothing you can do to improve the blood flow in general. Aspirin can help but it should have been taken from week 12 to make a difference.

I was told that EDF is more important measure than the PI, if it says present, it is a good sign that the blood flow is still adequate.

In my case I had a dropped on the growth chart, from 50th to 10th and 3rd centile within weeks. I was given steroids to strenghten baby's lungs. Baby was born tiny but perfectly formed and healthy at 36 weeks.

Have they checked the placenta growth factor? The PlGF can indicate if there is an issue with the placenta that can also affect the growth. Also is your blood preassure ok?

Try not to worry in many cases the high resistance can sort itself out. You are in good hands and you will have regular checks and scans going forward. X
