Breathlessness in pregnancy - A&E

Hi, I’ve been getting breathlessness during my pregnancy for probably a good couple of months. I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant. I’ve mentioned it previously to my midwife and she checked my iron levels which are low again so thought it could be that. I’ve been working on increasing my iron for the past month, she’s took my bloods again today and we should hopefully find out in a couple of days if my iron levels have increased. I explained I get breathless when doing simple tasks like hanging out washing, walking my daughter to preschool less than 10 mins away, taking the stairs. However I’m fine if I’m not doing much or sat still. I explained it doesn’t scare me & I can catch my breath if I stop and take a minute. I don’t feel ill or have any other symptoms I’m concerned about. I seem to be carrying this baby a lot higher than my first so not sure if he’s just pushing all my organs up into my lungs or maybe my lungs don’t have as much space to inflate. She called the midwifery department at the hospital and they told me to go to A&E. This seems completely over the top to me and more like they are fobbing me off to another department to deal with. I just wondered if others have struggled with shortness of breath in pregnancy, especially in the 3rd trimester. Surely it’s not that uncommon? I really don’t think a trip to A&E is necessary.

Can't you go to MAU instead of A&E?
In my hospital there's a poster that says MAU is basically A&E but for pregnant women and it explains that we may have to wait quite a while to be seen, just like A&E really

@Theresamagicalplace

I imagine their concern is a potential blood clot in the lungs. Probably unlikely but definitely worth getting checked if they've recommended it. Clots are more likely during pregnancy so they probably want to be safe not sorry.

@DoG87

They did 3 ECGs, blood tests, blood pressure, pressing on my legs for pains and then put me on a drip for hydration

I had a chest xray while pregnant and they gave me a lead pinny to wear over my tummy

Bless you, it's an awful feeling. I was breathless in both my pregnancies but pretty sure it was down to me being anaemic. I couldn't walk up the stairs without struggling, not could I finish speaking a sentence without pausing for a breath!

I'm not sure why you bother seeing a midwife op seeing as you know so much better than any medical professional Hmm

The other posters are correct. The intention is to rule out a clot in your lung, you are far, far more at risk of clots in pregnancy. Radiation will be used in the form of a ct scan but the baby will be shielded as much as possible. If you do have a clot and it's undetected then your life and the baby's life are at serious risk.

Do as you were advised and go to hospital now.

I had similar with my second pregnancy and had lots of checks for a pulmonary embolism. It wasn't, but I had ectopic heartbeats the whole way through pregnancy and ended up on inhalers just to get up the stairs. I haven't needed to use my inhaler since I gave birth two years ago.
Please go and get checked if it's been recommended.

This thread encouraged me to ring the assessment unit about my own breathlessness and they were so lovely and thorough and checked nothing untoward as I’ve been feeling quite out of breath too. It does seem better to always check just in case and the doctor and midwives were lovely . They did an ECG , blood test, urine test and finger prick test and I was grateful all ok and for how professional and thorough they were
