I know it's safe to exercise and it's encouraged but I'm wondering if you are over weight (170lbs 5ft,5) would it be safe to try lose some of that ? I only got my BFP yesterday and I am delighted don't get me wrong but had a negative last week or what I thought was a negative test (may have been the faintest line) and had resolved to try shift some of this weight in the new year as I'll be so over weight by 3rd trimester I don't feel it's healthy going into pregnancy this out of shape. Any thoughts ? I wouldn't be restricting calories or foods I suppose just getting more active and hoping I lose weight or tone up a bit over the next few weeks.

Honestly, you won't lose weight if your not in a calorie deficit. Yes, exercise can increase the amount of calories you burn but very rarely enough to not adjust your diet!

You shouldn't need extra calories at this stage so that's not a concern but I'd say from my experience you can't plan pregnancy. You may feel fine and be able to eat less/do more.

Before I got pregnant I was training for an ultramarathon plus going gym 5 mornings a week to lift weights, and hardly eating any carbs. By 6 weeks I could barely go for a dog walk and just wanted to eat plain carbs and nothing else.

I put on loads of weight (and bloat) some of which I've now lost from being active again in second trimester. But my point is I didn't realise just how hard some women find the first trimester so don't give yourself a hard time if things don't work out perfect.

Honestly I think you have enough going on with pregnancy. I don't think losing weight should be the goal. That doesn't stop you exercising and eating healthy which is always going to be beneficial.

I pretty much spent my first trimester eating so I wouldn't feel nauseous. But I did eat fruit, nuts and tons of crusty bread.

Listen to your body, eat good food when you're hungry, rest when you're tired, exercise if you can and I hope you have a lovely pregnancy. Congratulations!

If you're overweight then you could try eating more low gi foods and less refined carbs, exercise a bit more if you can but generally you just need to take it as it comes and stay as active as possible while you can (you could get spd and not be able to walk for months so it's worth walking as much as you can while you can for example)

A friend of mine had gestational diabetes, and shed a lot of weight in response.

Baby is healthy and 7 months old now.

It's certainly possible but I would focus more on healthy eating and regular exercise. I would avoid setting goals, you'll see decent results in your fitness and appearance regardless.

Before I got pregnant, I was about to embark on my weight loss journey and get back into the gym.
I managed three gym sessions then I hit 6 weeks and I felt like rubbish.
The only way to describe it was a constant hangover all day, every day until the end of week 9.
I’m now 10 weeks and feel loads better and can stomach vegetables and fruit. Before that, I could only stomach beige food as I constantly felt so, so sick.

I’ve learnt that you just have to take one day at a time as you may feel great one day, then can’t get out of bed the next.

Now I’m feeling normal, I’m slowly getting back on track with my eating and restarting the gym from next week.

For me, first trimester has been extremely challenging in all my successful pregnancies. I’m exhausted, I vomit, I feel sick all day. I can hardly eat. Everything smells weird, so I couldn’t even manage tap water. I had a beige diet.

I was bloated. Toning up would not have been remotely visible.

Your ligaments change so you have to take care when exercising.

I’d avoid making any plans at all, and just see how it goes.

To echo what the others have said, you may find that you don't want to exercise or eat certain things due to symptoms and that's totally OK! What might be helpful if you are able is to shift the focus away from weight and take part in some health promoting behaviours- think adding, not taking away. Some yoga or prenatal pilates can be great. There are tons of low impact workouts on YouTube. Also, eating plenty of fruit and veg and staying hydrated.

Yes be kind to yourself and put the weight worries out of your mind. I am a bit overweight and have put more on during my pregnancy so much so I had a couple of comments about twins! Just does not matter - listen to your body and the guidance. Calorie deficiency is not healthy for developing brains. The NHS website tells you not to loose weight but to put some weight on. Eat healthy if you can (some days I could only manage bland cake) and exercise is very good for baby but not overdoing it. This is the time to think about getting the calories your body needs to support your precious baby, not the time to worry about your weight loss goals. When the baby arrives and it does go quick I’ll be trying to shift 2-3 stone with exercise and diet. Today I could barely walk to the postbox!!

I don't think you should try to lose weight while pregnant - i don't think its even encouraged in very overweight people is it? As far as I know the more overweight you start your pregnancy the less weight they expect you to put on during the course of the pregnancy, but i don't think its an expectation to lose any!

From my personal experience, I started my pregnancy with my BMI in the late 30s and no one seemed concerned at all, they just said I probably wouldn't put much on. I'm now full term and have put on 1 stone 3lbs in total which isn't a huge amount in the grand scheme of things.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 05/01/2022 17:51

i think thee advice is not aim to lose weight, but try not to gain.

If you’re what? 2 stone ish overweight, if you maintain through your pregnancy you’ll find yourself a lot lighter after.

Hopefully you’ll be lucky and not be like me who had to eat constantly in order to feel vaguely normal. I was only not nauseous when I was eating!

Somerandomgirl · 05/01/2022 21:37

Think it will be hard to tone at this point...and with pregnancy we become softer and rounder and have to be careful with everything .. if u get nausea u might be able to loose weight simply cause not eating but otherwise ...
.... still saying that...so many models and what not continue working out... maybe best to ask your doctor

Don’t worry :) . You are probably going to shed loads of weight with morning sickness . I was overweight. 71kg 5 ft3 and size 14. I’m now 62.5kg size 10 and maintaining my weight at 25 weeks pregnant ,which means I am still losing weight as the baby is growing , I’ve had the scan last week and the baby is growing well. My lifestyle has changed and I’ve cut out junk and walking 1 hour a day.

Good luck 😉

Elle234 · 07/01/2022 19:20

I was meant to say I started out 71kg size 14 . Lost weight from sickness and now 62.5kg size 10 at 15 weeks pregnant . Stupid typos haha

Anybody have any recommendations for accurate scales? I have an amazon cheapie which seems reasonably accurate (i check with bog standard scales if, like this morning I seem to have randomly lost 3lbs overnight Confused).

However I’m not convinced with it’s accuracy on the breakdowns, everything seems to be on a scale, so of last nights 3lbs, apparently 1lb was muscle.

Someone recommended worthers? Worthingtons? I know impedence and the whole measuring fat vs muscle is never going to be wholly accurate, is it worth shelling out or are they all about the same?

On the plus side, if the 3lbs is a genuine loss, i’m about half a pound from the “normal” weight for my height, which I’m really pleased with as I started just tipping into the “obese” category..
