Would they offer me aspirin in the UK?

I live abroad, I've been pregnant twice in the last 2 years. I lost the first baby at 19 weeks, the tests came back inconclusive but the baby was well below the 5th percentile so possibly a blood flow issue.
Early in my subsequent pregnancy I saw a haematologist who did tests and didn't find any clotting issues but put me on 150mg aspirin daily from 7 weeks until 35 weeks. My pregnancy went well and I now have a happy, healthy 7 week old - not sure if the aspirin really helped or if it was a coincidence.

Im thinking of moving back to the UK next year and trying for another baby in the future. If I get pregnant again I wondered if a GP or midwife in the UK would put me on the same aspirin a day if there was no definite previous clotting issue? Ive never been pregnant in the UK and the medical system here is very different.

I had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy and for my second I being offered aspirin.

happytoday73 · 01/01/2022 19:16

I was also given low dose aspirin in 2nd pregnancy and sil currently is on same for her first pregnancy for less issues than you have.. So highly likely

gogohm · 01/01/2022 19:18

They will if medically indicated

Thank you! I think I would feel happier if I could take aspirin during future pregnancies

Just take it, would be my (non qualified) advice. I did.

I’ve been taking 75mg aspirin with this pregnancy (and the previous one that didn’t work out tbf), discussed it with the nurse first and she said it couldn’t hurt - not got it on prescription as it’s so cheap over the counter at the supermarket pharmacy

Totalwasteofpaper · 01/01/2022 19:30

Totally normal….
I’m pregnant now - The midwife recommended it to me simply due to my age I think.
I just get my husband to buy it over the counter as they wouldn’t sell it to me without a prescription which was a hassle.

Yes, i had 150mg from 12 weeks to 36 weeks due to high risk for preeclampsia. I didnt have PE in the end, but i did have pregnancy induced hypertension 38 weeks and my baby was Small for Gestational Age. 5lbs 12oz at birth at 38w. She was pretty consistently dropping down the curves from 20w onwards so it seems the asprin really did help to get to 38w.

I will be taking aspirin prescription from midwife from 12 weeks due to previous losses and PCOS, believe also because of family history of preeclampsia. Would be decided at the point of your first appointment (mine was at around 9 weeks)

sunshine423 · 01/01/2022 20:08

Been on 150mg daily since 12 weeks due to previous stillbirth.

You don't buy 75mg aspirin over-the-counter very easily. It wouldn't need tobe prescribed.

rainydogday · 01/01/2022 21:34

Yes, if you had small for gestational age babies in the past. Start taking from 12 weeks. Ask your midwife. It can help with the placenta

I got it in my local supermarket, no questions asked…
SweetBabyCheeses99 · 01/01/2022 21:44

Tbh I think you will be v disappointed with the NHS. You don’t even get any miscarriage investigations until you’ve had at least three. I don’t think anyone is recommended aspirin or progesterone for threatened miscarriage here, they just say to wait to out.

CrazyOldBagLady · 01/01/2022 21:48

I was advised to take aspirin by my midwife but the pharmacy wouldn't sell it to me once I was showing, I had to send my husband to get it.

I do. Have been taking it since my first positive test this pregnancy and have no prescription. They’re just on the shelves in supermarkets. Some pharmacies have it behind the counter but all that’s needed is to ask for it, simples.

For the OP: if they don’t prescribe it to you just buy some yourself, it’s cheap as chips. We be heard loads of women do their own research and start taking it, that’s what I did. When I mentioned it to my midwife she confirmed there’s no harm in taking it and even seemed impressed that I’d taken the initiative.

Opps, sorry. That was a very bad typo.
I meant to say
You can buy 75mg aspirin over-the-counter very easily. It wouldn't need to be prescribed.
