Would it be silly to call about this?

Hi guys. I'm currently 18+5, have my 20 week scan at 20+2. I'm just a little concerned as I haven't felt any movement whatsoever yet. I'm on the slimmer side and have a posterior placenta. I know they say up to 24 weeks is normal, but I thought I'd feel something by now. Would it be worth contacting the consultant I'm under for a doppler? She said i could call if I'm ever concerned about anything.

I didn’t feel anything till 23 or 24 weeks and I didn’t have a posterior placenta which I think they say makes you feel less movement? I mean you can call if you want for reassurance but it seems unnecessary.

Missnicolinda96 · 31/12/2021 15:01

No it's anterior that means you might feel movement later. Mine is posterior, meaning I should feel movement sooner.

18+5 is really early for movement. I had a posterior placenta too, and didn’t feel anything until 22/23 weeks - it’s just a waiting game; although I completely appreciate your anxiety.

I wouldn't call at this point, I don't think they are likely to offer you a doppler. I have a posterior placenta and am slim but still didn't feel anything at all until 21 weeks.

Borracha · 31/12/2021 15:54

Admittedly I had an anterior placenta with DC1, but I didn’t feel anything until around 22/23 weeks.

In all honesty, I bet you have felt movement, you just haven’t recognised it as such. In a few weeks, it will get stronger/more frequent and you’ll think ‘so that’s what that was!’

With that said, never ever be worried about getting something checked, just to put your mind at rest.

Urgh, congratulations that should have been!

thebigpurpleone · 31/12/2021 16:15

18 weeks is still so early. Try and relax.

roseblosssom · 31/12/2021 16:28

Is this your first? I didn't feel anything with my first until a day before the 20 week scan. With subsequent pregnancies it's been much sooner.

Fleur405 · 31/12/2021 16:33

With my first pregnancy I didn’t feel movement until 20 weeks (also slim with a posterior placenta) so it really isn’t unusual. I’d actually say it would be unusual to feel movement this early especially in first pregnancy - baby is still really tiny.

Fleur405 · 31/12/2021 16:37

Sorry posted too soon - meant to say though that it’s not at all silly to call and I’m sure a midwife would be happy to discuss with you (chances of getting hold of the actual consultant on the phone are probably pretty slim but there is obviously always a doctor on duty and midwife will speak to them if there is a specific concern (sounds like you might have additional risk factors?) - one did that for me recently because I’m consultant led and baby was measuring v.small for gestational age so they arranged an extra scan when normally they wouldn’t do so).

Pamparam · 01/01/2022 09:51

Slim with posterior placenta for my first, felt movements at 19 1/2 weeks. I’m sure if you ring they will simply reassure you that it’s normal and fine.

mrscotton · 01/01/2022 10:39

I was told that 20-24 weeks was normally the time you would start to feel something. I started feel my little girl at 21 weeks but very faintly. Only recently you can see her moving if you look at my belly and im 30 weeks now.

BabyC21 · 01/01/2022 10:59

Fat with anterior placenta and felt movement at 18 weeks. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong for you, I just mean it’s so varied. The movement at that stage I can only describe as a fish moving around - some say butterfly. It didn’t become more proper kicks/rolls etc until around 22 weeks I’d say.
So in essence no there’s no reason to worry that you haven’t felt movement, but if you are worried then there’s no issue in asking to be checked.

Furmummy · 01/01/2022 11:40

I am 19 weeks and feel exactly the same! I have been debating ringing the midwife, but then trying to reassure myself that it’s most likely fine. How long till your scan? I am going to try holding off till then - also talked myself out of buying a home Doppler machine! It’s so hard isn’t it xxx

mummyh2016 · 01/01/2022 11:41

Unlikely, you've said yourself they said anytime up until 24 weeks is normal, I doubt the consultant will be worried at 18 weeks.

LindaEllen · 01/01/2022 11:42

@Missnicolinda96

No it's anterior that means you might feel movement later. Mine is posterior, meaning I should feel movement sooner.
She said she didn't have a posterior placenta, which is exactly the same as what you're saying .. guessing you misread.
custardbear45 · 01/01/2022 12:05

I didn't feel anything with my first until way after 20 weeks. I'm currently 23 weeks with my second and have only just started feeling regular movements. I think they started around 19 weeks with the odd flutter. I was like you at the 17/18 week mark, you really feel like you should be feeling things by then especially in second pregnancy.

They might offer you a Doppler if you phone but I think it's more likely that they'd reassure you it's really early and perfectly normal not to have felt anything yet. Give it a few more weeks and you'll be missing the peace!

Mabelhc · 01/01/2022 12:53

So difficult bot to worry isn't it... but further echoing the comments of others; I had posterior placenta & didn't feel anything at all until around 22 weeks!
