Is 16 weeks the earliest you can find out sex of baby?

You can get a blood test from seven weeks apparently. I’m not sure how this is ethical though.

Chanel05 · 31/12/2021 12:07

I paid for a blood test at 10 weeks, though it's offered from 8 weeks.

TH22 · 31/12/2021 12:09

You can opt for an NIPT test (you'll get a scan aswell).

How is it any less ethical than finding out the sex of the baby any other way?
Bells3032 · 31/12/2021 12:16

Nipt test can be done from 10 weeks. Prices usually start at around £300.

Don't understand why it would be unethical. We found out then.

GrowBabyGrow · 31/12/2021 12:18

This is a completely non judgemental question but I'm interested in knowing why people who have found out the sex pre the 20 week scan chose to do that? I'm asking as it is obviously an additional cost when you can find out for free later on. I'm going to find out the sex at the 20 week scan so this isn't because I'm anti knowing or anything, just genuinely interestedSmile

troper678 · 31/12/2021 12:19

@HalfTermHalfTerm I think it's potentially less ethical to find out at that stage of pregnancy in case it influences any decisions that may be made based on sex

I had a mmc before my daughter and I hated that I never knew the sex of that baby. I wanted to know my now daughter's, regardless of the outcome.

It cost me £129, I had it on the Monday evening, it was posted to California and I got the results at 1am on Thursday morning.

Some hospitals do not disclose the sex of baby at any scans. Some areas you have to pay to go private
Starcaller · 31/12/2021 12:21

Our NHS trust has a policy not to tell you the sex.

We had a private scan at 16 weeks and found out the gender, but the scan was because I have severe anxiety and I was having a bad week and wanted to know baby was ok, plus it coincided with my wife's birthday so it was a treat to go and see them. I wouldn't have paid for a scan or blood test specifically to find out the gender as it wasn't that important but it's helped me feel more confident.
Kitkat151 · 31/12/2021 12:23

All the clinics round here offer scan of sex at 15 weeks

Because people can’t wait that long to find out.....my DD found out at 15 weeks with both her DDs.... she was itching to know....she couldn’t wait until 20 weeks
Frederica852 · 31/12/2021 12:25

I had the harmony test so had the option to find out the sex from 10 weeks

GrowBabyGrow · 31/12/2021 12:26

Thank you all, I didn't know some hospitals don't tell you the sex - I'd better check if mine does!

Kitkat151 · 31/12/2021 12:26

My DN in Australia found out at 11 weeks with all hers.....they offer a blood test there which also includes finding out about chromosome disorders I think

That’s the one😁.... I couldn’t remember the name
Tibtab · 31/12/2021 12:29

I had a Harmony NIPT with my first, I was anxious about something being wrong with the baby. I primarily had the test to check for chromosomal abnormalities but it was nice to know the sex too.

Sometimes you can’t tell from the scan, NIPT is more accurate.

We did because we wanted a private scan between the two NHS scans to check everything was okay (first pregnancy and we were both keen to check in on the baby!) and the one we picked was a wellbeing scan with the option to find out the gender, and we knew we wanted to know gender in any case so we went for it at 16-17 weeks.
ShippingNews · 31/12/2021 12:37

My DS and his partner found out at 8 weeks though the NIPT test. She had it as an extra screening test because she is 42 and diabetic . So we all knew it was not only healthy, but also that is is a little girl.

Bells3032 · 31/12/2021 12:43

@growbabygrow For us we did the nipt test anyway as it was a suprise baby when we had been going through ivf due to my husbands very poor sperm quality from cancer. We wanted something more accurate than the NHS tests so was included.

I debated finding out the sex at all but originally it was twins and we found out we lost the second one at the nipt appt. I hated thst I knew nothing about the lost baby and it was just an it so I wanted to be able to humanise it

Opus17 · 31/12/2021 12:45

We had the harmony test and you can check a box to have them tell you the sex with that. blood test, so accurate.

The scan is not to find out the sex of baby so it's not always looked for or discussed. In some trusts it's policy not to. To protect the individual sonographer and the trust from potential lawsuits if they give the wrong sex, it's very uncommon but not unknown. Most songogs however will give a quick scan over the area and it's often quite obvious what the sex is.
Nookable · 31/12/2021 13:04

@HalfTermHalfTerm there are ethical concerns as people may choose to abort female foetuses.

In some countries this is a bigger issue than others. In India the birth rate of boys is higher than girls and its estimated that there are 46 million missing women and girls due to abortion of female foetuses (often forced abortion) and preferential treatment being given to male children.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 31/12/2021 13:14

@Nookable I understand that in certain countries or cultures there may be an issue with baby girls being aborted, what I specifically meant was that I don’t see how finding out from a blood test very early on is any less ethical than finding out from a scan at 16 weeks.
