I was extremely sick in first trimester & then since 28 weeks onwards to the point of non-functional

as a result, all the lovely research & courses etc i planned for us to do on baby safety/caring for a baby we have done nothing!

first time parents & not been around babies at all - any recommendations on how we can quickly & gently get up to speed with the must-knows /most important safety aspects etc?

thanks

Congratulations. Honestly even if you did do courses once baby is here and you're in the newborn fog you're likely to forget most of it in my experience.

Most of looking after a new baby is common sense and for everything else a quick google search followed by the word mumsnet will most likely yield helpful responses.

Sorry you've had such a rough ride of it with the sickness !

I did NCT but wouldn't particularly really rate that anyway in terms of the baby care tips etc

You could contact your local hospital or where you are due to give birth as they usually offer a free workshop via nhs or your local family centre ?

I heard good things about the daisy foundation classes but I'm not sure if they do anything online / you could see if there is a trainer local to you that has anything?

How are you hoping to feed baby?

You could try this: thebumptobabychapter.co.uk/the-baby-chapter/

I haven’t used it so can’t actually recommend it but I am using the birth course and think it’s good.

There used to be a pretty good thing on Netflix showing you how to bath baby, how to swaddle baby, feeding positions etc but I can’t find it anymore…

Just get this brilliant book and read it cover to cover. This was honestly my bible for months:

Hi OP. I’m sorry you’ve had such a tough time.

Looking after a small baby is largely common sense - make sure they’re at a comfortable temperature, fed, clean etc. I did an NCT course before my first was born but I didn’t need it really.
I was also the first of my friendship group to have a baby and I had never even held a newborn before I had DD1, let alone changed a nappy.

In terms of safely, I’m sure you’re already aware of most of it - back to sleep, don’t leave them in a car seat for more than a couple of hours, make sure they don’t get too hot, don’t fall asleep with them on a sofa. That’s basically it, I think. There’s not much more to consider safety wise until they start moving about and that won’t be for months yet.

I did a free webinar through the Baby Academy. I wouldn’t say it was amazing but given it was a free option, it covered most of the basics (I chose the baby care option) but if you wanted something more detailed they offer a discount at the end of the webinar for the full day sessions - I haven’t tried these so can’t say if they’re worth the money

I read a book called baby secrets, it was really useful! Hard to get hold of but usually on eBay. X
