Baby movements - is this normal?

Hello,
So I’m 30 weeks pregnant and originally I felt a lot of kicks, to the point they used to make me feel quite ill as relentless. In the last week I’ve noticed I now only get one or two kicks a day but a fair bit of wriggling and other movement - I’m not necessarily worried about frequency but just wondering If the lack of actual kicks is normal?

You should probably contact your unit to be assessed if there has been a change in the last week. I think they say whatever is normal for you is fine so if anything changes (as you say it has), go in as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side

Fleur405 · 30/12/2021 16:08

I get a lot of non-kicking movement and when obstetrician asked me about movements yesterday she made no comment on that so think it is normal. Agree though that’s it’s worth a call to your triage line just to confirm with them given that you’ve noticed a change in pattern - I’m sure they’ll say it’s fine but never hurts to check.

Tortoisesmovefasterthanme · 30/12/2021 16:12

Movements change as baby has less space, so rather than kicks/punches etc you’ll notice more wriggles and rolls. But of course as others have said, it’s always worth getting any change checked out x

Scirocco · 30/12/2021 16:18

With any changes in movement patterns it's worth getting checked out with maternity triage.

custardbear · 30/12/2021 16:36

Yes definitely call the midwife, it's probably fine but never worth risking not checking any worries

custardbear · 30/12/2021 16:38

FWIW I've had two children and I remember going for a movement check and said I'd hardly felt them kicking, I had a bottom to press when I felt the kicks and they did a graph of that and the kick-o-meter - he was moving tonnes more than I could feel 😆

TinyLittlePandaSneeze · 30/12/2021 16:40

Call your midwife. Never take any chances. They won't mind.

hopesndreams210310 · 30/12/2021 16:44

I'm really sorry but to the people who've commented above saying that baby runs out of room, that isn't strictly true- please have a look into kicks count and you'll see the legacy of it comes from a lady who was told not to worry about her baby's movements as they'd probably just started to run out of room and subsequently that was not the case, the baby was poorly. I would never tell people that towards the end of pregnancy, the uterus is stretchy and I felt my boy kick and punch right up to week 42.

In short, please go and get checked out lovely, if you're concerned always trust your instincts. Hope all turns out ok xx

Somerandomgirl · 30/12/2021 17:51

Do you feel them when you lay on your side? I'm 30 weeks also and some days dont feel much but instead kicks ALL night!! Would u feel them if at night? I'm a light sleeper soo it wakes me up....

NewKidOnTheBlock99 · 30/12/2021 18:02

Thanks so much everyone for all the responses! I will give my midwife a ring - because of the frequency I’ve not necessarily been worried I feel a lot of movement just not that many sharp kicks or punches as I was.

@Somerandomgirl interestingly - I’ve stopped feeling anything at night - I was feeling a fair bit & was keeping me awake but the baby doesn’t seem to move at all now! If the baby was being still on my side and I went on to my back for a couple of minutes I would feel movement but that doesn’t work at the moment either.

If the change was post-28w, which it sounds like it was, I would go in. The ‘running out of room’ thing is outdated thinking.

teaandchocolate1 · 30/12/2021 18:20

@Tortoisesmovefasterthanme

Movements change as baby has less space, so rather than kicks/punches etc you’ll notice more wriggles and rolls. But of course as others have said, it’s always worth getting any change checked out x
This is wrong and dangerous advice.

I'm 33 weeks now and the kicks and punches are getting stronger the more my pregnancy progresses/the bigger the baby gets.

Bunnyfuller · 30/12/2021 18:23

In the meantime try something high sugar/cold/both to see if that gives a burst of movement.

Catsandslippers · 30/12/2021 19:14

It may be that baby has moved into a position where you don't feel the kicks as strongly. I'm 32 weeks with my second & currently breech, I haven't had any sharp kicks this time round, just wriggling & fluttery kicks in my hips. Definitely best to get checked out though as there has been a change.

Somerandomgirl · 30/12/2021 21:17

Definately go get checked then hun x as others said it could be juat the baby position but go get seen to be sure . You'll worry otherwise constantly too..

KiloWhat · 30/12/2021 21:56

@NewKidOnTheBlock99 hope you've rung and the midwives have been able to reassure you or get you in for a scan x

hopesndreams210310 · 31/12/2021 11:44

Hope you're ok OP x

Tortoisesmovefasterthanme · 31/12/2021 11:55

@teaandchocolate1 @hopesndreams210310
I haven’t said that baby’s movements reduce as they get bigger by any means, if I had said that then I can understand how that would be dangerous advice. What I did say (if you read it again) is that movements can CHANGE so rather than feeling quick jabs as lot of women do in the 2nd trimester, you’re more likely to feel baby wriggling and rolling. This is what’s stated on NHS sites, Emma’s diary, Tommy’s, what to expect etc etc. if you think about the baby in the uterus, it won’t have as much room to do a full on kick BUT it of course will still be moving.

Hope you’ve spoken to your midwife anyway OP as they’re always there for any checks/reassurance/help x

Tortoisesmovefasterthanme · 31/12/2021 11:57

Also “kick counts” is outdated guidance and is not recommended anymore. Go off what’s usual for your own baby.

PurplePansy05 · 31/12/2021 11:59

It could be that the baby changed position, my DS did twice, at some point past 28 weeks and at 37 weeks and I felt hardly anything for some time on both occasions. It was very worrying particularly the second time round and I was monitored daily at the hospital because of this and other complications. Thankfully all was well, but I'd always say get checked. You are always right if you notice a change, trust yourself xx
