Breathless at 5 weeks pregnant

Hello

I have heard of breathlessness in pregnancy once baby starts to squish your organs and things start to move about but I am 5 weeks and struggling.

Walking upstairs, putting laundry on the airer, carrying a light bag from the car into the house are all tasks that are making me really breathless, even sitting down it's as if I'm forgetting to breathe.

I am a non smoker, no covid, healthy weight etc. I can't work it out, I feel ill with it! Having to take my asthma inhaler a couple of times a day instead of my usual once or twice a month maximum!

I haven't told my dr I'm pregnant yet but think I'm going to have to and mention this as I'm starting to get worried. Has anyone else felt the same?

I'm also 5 weeks and breathless. It's normal but if you're worried you should always get checked out.

TyrannosaurusRights · 27/12/2021 14:59

It’s a hormonal thing at this stage. Normal but irritating.

WakeUpLockie · 27/12/2021 15:05

I had that this time round. Annoying!

Juno231 · 27/12/2021 15:05

It's normal. A simple Google would tell you that too!

Lostintranslatio · 27/12/2021 15:36

Totally normal. I'm almost 14weeks and still get breathless doing normal tasks 😂

layna12 · 27/12/2021 16:01

@Juno231 I wanted to chat to other women about it, not Google.

@Squiff70 @WakeUpLockie sorry to hear you both have it too, it feels horrible! X

@Lostintranslatio sorry to hear you have it too, I can't imagine doing another 35 weeks of it 😂

Such compassion Hmm you could have just closed the thread rather than sharing hatred
Tippytaps · 27/12/2021 16:16

@layna12 it is probably normal but best to get checked as it could be something like anemia.

endofagain · 27/12/2021 16:27

If you are asthmatic and need to use your inhaler more than usual due to breathlessness you need medical advice asap.

SantasChestnuts · 27/12/2021 16:33

It can be, and is likely to be, absolutely normal.

However, if you're concerned get checked. I had a pulmonary embolism during my pregnancy. So always worth checking these things.

Frbct · 27/12/2021 16:39

I also experienced this in first trimester. But I think you should also mention to your gp. I hope you can take it easy and rest.

Lilybow · 28/12/2021 16:42

I am experiencing this in my second trimester and find it frustrating, but also found out pregnancy has made me anaemic and my blood pressure is low so could be that.

Christmascakecakecheese · 28/12/2021 16:53

It's normal so please try not to worry, something to do with progesterone I think.

DoG87 · 28/12/2021 21:44

I’ve had breathlessness throughout my pregnancy. I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant and found out about 3 weeks ago my iron levels are low again & this is why I’ve been finding it difficult to catch my breath. Might be worth getting your iron levels checked

Moonpiglets · 28/12/2021 21:54

I had a pulmonary embolism early in pregnancy (from 10 weeks though, not as early as you) and kept being told my breathlessness was normal. It wasn’t. It was also different to when I need to take an inhaler. It didn’t feel like there was a problem getting enough air into my lungs quickly enough (which is how I would usually describe feeling breathless) it felt instead as if there was a problem with the air itself - as if the air was going into my lungs but it didn’t have enough oxygen in.

But, to reassure you (as it is normal to spend extent in early pregnancy) I was very breathless. As in, I felt it when I was driving my car or sitting down, not just upon exertion

*some extent
