Hi All,

Quiet desperate for some advice as doctors are closed all day today and in quiet alot of discomfort. For past 3/4 days this sudden red raised bumpy looking rash has appeared it started on my stretch marks on belly. Then slowly moved to my right inner thigh. Then ankles but now it's all behind both thighs / ankles top of foot / belly. I had blood tests done to check liver etc all blood works came back fine and normal nothing wrong there. It's not on th soles of my feet or on the palms of my hands. It flares up mostly at night time and during the day it's fine.

Has anyone suffered from this type of rash before closer to due date or during pregnancy? If love any type of advice or help. Currently applying E45 which is the only thing stopping the itch. GP stated she couldn't prescribe me antihistamines but the hospital stated I should take a periton. Quiet confused on what to do won't know till I call GP back tomorrow as even my local chemist said it has to be prescribed antihistamines during pregnancy due to it making you feel drowsy. So haven't taken any medicines yet.

Have you spoken to the midwives - have they checked this rash out?

You can take piriton when you are pregnant though.

Yes I called in today explained the rash they said it sounds like an allergic reaction. I said it can't be as I havent changed anything diet / clothes washing / body wash wise. But she said your bloods are all fine nothing there and it would show up if it was.

May buy periton tomorrow see how I get on. Really hoping a doctor sees me tomorrow to actually look at the rash rather then diagnose me on the phone. My triage service at hospital midwives also said nothing they can do.

I'm thinking it's likely PUPPP have you looked at that?

Assumed it was maybe this but it's so itchy / kinda burns and stops me from sleeping. The E45 helps massively as well as aloe vera. States pupps goes away after giving birth for some women...gosh that's like 3/4 weeks away.

@Mya2021 I had similar to this in my first trimester which was apparently a progesterone reaction (IVF pregnancy and I had progesterone pessaries and injections). There was a cream the doctors prescribed called Eumovate which I'm sure was steroid. Was also told conflicting advice on Piriton so I steered clear.

mummabear18 · 26/12/2021 23:33

I had this!!! Mine sister at exactly the same time as yours. The midwives just called it a pregnancy rash and said it was quite normal and nothing to worry about but the real nightmare was trying to find antihistamines. Basically they told me that over the phone and when I conveyed it to the pharmacist they wouldn’t prescribe the antihistamines that were recommended and told me to go to the doctor. The doctor also refused to prescribe them because there was a concern about taking antihistamines in the late stages of pregnancy ( I was low risk throughout). The doctor told me to go to A&E. In the end way I knew so bad someone suggested I go to maternity ward with a concern of ‘no movement’ and get seen to there and they finally gave me a script which the pharmacy were then happy to fill 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️🙄🤦🏻‍♀️🙄
They told me that next time I should just get my husband to go into the pharmacy and request the antihistamines instead and not say they’re for me. The was in a lot of discomfort with it but it cleared up super quickly with the anti histamines 👍🏻
Pics attached. Rash photo taken in bath (not me being sweaty 😅)

Yes, I had this, same timeframe - midwives had never seen it before (??), even GP didn’t know, but I am certain it was PUPPP. GP prescribed me Claritin, I took one pill and that was it, gone completely in about 6 hours.

Thank you for the images and medicine name!! great idea I was thinking to just pop into hospital tomorrow with reduced movement and also mention my rash and see what they say. So the medication you took was all fine baby wise etc? I'm just scared to take anything this late in pregnancy.

Your rash looks slightly more tamed then mine gosh mine is bumpy everywhere inflamed red hot to touch and so uncomfortable itchy.

That is the drug name, piriton is a brand name - exact same thing.

I had to take them throughout all my pregnancies.

May ask my GP what she can prescribe me or go hospital I can't take the itching anymore at night!

This sounds like a dream I hope my GP is as kind! From the sounds of it she just never bothered to even look at my photos I sent over to her that they ask for. She didn't even see me face to face or via zoom. Just stated use any moisturiser. 6 hours!!!!

Yes, it sounds like PUPPP. I got some relief with Piriton but even then I could hardly sleep at night. E45 do an itch relief cream you could try. I would ask your doctor or midwife if they have any tips - there might be something else they can recommend. (I had it 17 years ago - so there might be some newer products you could use). At the time I had a steroid cream (Betnovate which is a strong one) for something else but it didn’t help my PUPPP.

For me, it didn’t go away until after the birth 😭, sorry OP.

ChocoholicContralto · 26/12/2021 23:57

Just read loratadine and cetirizine are considered safe in pg these days (they weren’t 17 years ago - but that was due to lack of data) and they are likely to be more effective than Piriton, so I would ask your doctor about those. You can get them v cheap in supermarkets (on the shelf with painkillers etc), about £3.50 for a months worth

mummabear18 · 27/12/2021 00:19

Totally safe to take in late pregnancy and throughout as the other person said. What I would do is call the birthing ward and confirm with them for peace of mind in place of going in with reduced movement unless you haven’t already used that card. I only say that as I had visited once before in the pregnancy (first time mum and being concerned) and as I had ‘two’ notches against my name by the time I went to give birth they initially noted that I couldn’t use the birthing centre. It was only when I explained I had to effectively lie to get seen so I could get a prescription that they deleted my first visit from the system so I could still go ahead with the water birth... our hospitals really tie themselves up with red tape and policies!!

AntiHop · 27/12/2021 00:47

I developed eczema in my third trimester. I was taking loratadine anyway, as I have all year round allergies (bought over the counter). But the gp prescribed me piriton to take instead, as it helps with itching. E45 anti itch cream, and a mild steroid (not all the time) helped too.

Yeh so I rang triage maternity and the nurse said it's perfectly fine for me to take a periton and apparently women take it all the time during pregnancy. So I'll ask my GP again as she's the one that wouldn't prescribe it as she said you can't take it during pregnancy. I'll have to tell her nurse midwife said it's fine. I'm thinking to take periton or clartitin. I usually use to take a non drowsy version dunno of that still exists.

I know it wasn't during pregnancy but a week post partum and breastfeeding I had an allergic reaction to antibiotics covered in a rash. Gp said nothing I can prescribe you. Midwife sent me to hospital obstetrician said utter bollocks gps get so afraid of prescribing in pregnancy and breastfeeding. They prescribed piriton which the pharmacy then queried because I was breastfeeding. Hope you're better soon OP

mummabear18 · 27/12/2021 07:40

It’s highly likely that the GP will still refuse to prescribe it. They won’t take your word for it and are too afraid of the risk. In the end the hospital told me to either just buy it from boots or get hubby/someone else to buy it for ‘themselves’ and give it to me

mummabear18 · 27/12/2021 07:41

Good luck with it and hope you get better soon!

RandomMess · 27/12/2021 08:06

The non brands of piriton are really cheap I wouldn't bother with the hassle of trying to get a prescription at the moment tbh.

Okay so my GP is closed so I can only go by what the nurses / midwives are saying when I call them at the hospital. Which is take a periton. Clartitin states pregnant women can't use it.

GP still closed may just go buy periton and take tonight I am scared tho for side effects to baby. But I can't imagine why the midwives or nurses at hospital would suggest it then if it was not safe.

90% of the babies development happens in the first 12 weeks. That’s the highest risk time. Completely understand the concern but the midwives have said it’s safe and advised taking it and we’ve all taken it here 👍🏻 Can assure you our babies are totally fine
