Bootie minefield

Hi all. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have now got everything, clothes wise, for the baby up to 3-6 months. However, the MIL yesterday said we HAD to get booties for the baby as we hadn't gotten any (and I wasn't planning to). We are due in Feb, have got sleepsuits with feet, have socks just in case and a pram suit for pram walks if its that cold. Do I NEED to get booties? This is my first and thought I was fine without but would appreciate your opinions/experiences Smile

No.

They will come off in 2 seconds flat.

October2020 · 26/12/2021 12:13

Nope. We put socks on over onesies if needed and her feet were always in her snow suit or pram blankets anyway. We used them a lot more for her second winter!

SittingOvation · 26/12/2021 12:14

Absolutely not!

Lauraloop1516 · 26/12/2021 12:16

Ignore! Total waste of time on a newborn. Mil is old fashioned and has had her time being mum. What you say goes!

Lauraloop1516 · 26/12/2021 12:17

And I've had two winter babies - was given lots of booties that were really never used.

Caspianberg · 26/12/2021 12:20

Ds actually did wear them. Born beginning May, it was fairly cold. Neighbour knitted a few and some days he had socks on, footed sleepsuit and then booties ontop.

Midwife commented about a week after he was born how cold his feet were and we only had footed sleepsuit and cardigan on. So she suggested adding the socks and booties.

For feb baby definitely handy to get at least one pair in 0-3 months. Handy when in car seat etc also as can’t wear pram suit. And then add blanket

VoyageInTheDark · 26/12/2021 12:21

I had so many booties given and never used them! They come off so easily. You'll probably get given them as gifts anyway so don't bother buying any!

Takemine · 26/12/2021 12:23

If they keep them on. I'd be amazed.

Quite tricky to work out over heating if you're in a centrally heated house though, if they're wearing socks and woollen booties, I'd have thought. A little cooler is far better than a little too warm.

BobbleWobble1 · 26/12/2021 12:40

Wouldn't bother. They just fall off. I have some unworn from first time that still probably won't get used this time.

Katyppp · 26/12/2021 12:47

I see you are getting ready for the arguments before the baby is even born.
Why do some people have such attitudes?

00100001 · 26/12/2021 12:50

Another No!

Also be warned, they don't need hats on all the bloody time either... But people like your MIL will make comments.

Also on the list of things not needed;

Top and tail bowls
A special towel for baby. Oddly enough a hand towel works exactly the same way.
Blankets - in that, don't buy any, you will be given around 63 of them. Obviously do use blankets, just don't buy any Grin

00100001 · 26/12/2021 12:52

Oh and cotton wool balls. For.some odd reason this is a "must have" that midwives seem to mysteriously peddle. They "need" them for nappy changing and washing, and they will look like they're about to speed dial social services, if you happen to mention that you might date to use a flannel and/or wet wipes....

They don't need cotton wool balls... they're hopeless!

NameChangeCity123 · 26/12/2021 12:57

Honestly I had some knitted for my son and he never wore them, such a hassle taking in and off all the time to get baby grows on and off etc. suits with feet were the better option IME

Chely · 26/12/2021 13:17

We used booties a handful of times with each of ours. They often kick them off so not much point putting them on, sleepsuits and trousers with feet in are much better.

ThreeWells · 26/12/2021 14:47

Thanks all for confirming what I thought, nice to know I do have some instincts before baby is here Smile

@Katyppp absolutely! There are other things that MIL has said that we should or shouldn't be doing or should or shouldn't be dressing them in Angry but I've mostly ignored it so far, dreading her opinions when the baby arrives!

I've never used them Or bought them. They seem utterly pointless to me. Bet your MIL makes lot of suggestions doesn't she!

Scirocco · 26/12/2021 15:27

Their main function seems to be to give babies practice at throwing things.

BertieBotts · 26/12/2021 15:31

I have never used them, I don't know what they are for.

ThreeWells · 26/12/2021 16:34

@Sleepyquest how did you guess 🙄

But babies look adorable in booties!

Starcaller · 26/12/2021 16:50

My DD was a Feb baby and we never used them once. She didn't have any footwear for months and months. A lot of small babies had fancy little shoes on at baby classes and stuff but they just seemed unnecessary faff (and expense) to me. It's best for them to have bare feet anyway when learning to crawl and walk.

Flutterby8 · 26/12/2021 23:12

I have a 4 week old DD.
Believe me its hard enough getting a pair of socks to stay on her feet for more than 0.2seconds.
Booties look cute but there is no flipping point.
Sleepsuits all the way for us as its easier!
Except the cute christmas dress we put her in yesterday 😊

annlee3817 · 27/12/2021 15:31

You just spend most of your time picking them up off the floor or someone running after you with one because they've seen it drop from the buggy 🙄

Somerandomgirl · 27/12/2021 17:08

If she wants to buy them for you dont argue and accept but really theyre not necessary... and winter buggies have the warm covers and all
