Can I have a very small glass of champagne on Xmas day while pregnant?

I'm 18 weeks and my husband is very adamant that I don't have anything, not even a sip. I'd really like 50-100ml glass of champagne just on Xmas day during pregnancy. I know probably no point as it's such a small glass and my husband would probably make me feel guilty.

Is anyone else having a small drink and pregnant?

Yes of course you can! One small glass after 12 weeks is not going to do any damage.

RoseAndRose · 24/12/2021 08:18

Yes of course you can.

Having a drink or two on special occasions isn't a dangerous level of drinking

ItsSnowJokes · 24/12/2021 08:20

You have to take your own risk assessment on this. I did have the odd very small glass of wine through pregnancy but I know others will say they had nothing. Some on here will preach and say if you can't go 9 months without alcohol you have a problem and a terrible mother. Ignore those people.

Choccorocco · 24/12/2021 08:20

Well I’m sure you’ll hear all sorts here but I am sure you will be fine. It’s one drink, not ongoing drinking such as that associated with foetal alcohol syndrome! The nhs website suggests that no alcohol is the safest for your baby (of course!) but that if you do decide to drink, know how many units you will be consuming. A small glass is not much.
Have a great Christmas!! Xx

Suzi888 · 24/12/2021 08:21

Of course you can. It’s personal choice, some will drink none, some will have a full glass a few times a week.

I was worried about alcohol as drank heavily the first month due to various holidays and celebrations (wasn’t trying for a baby and no idea I was pregnant) MW said it was fine. She advised you have to be consuming alcoholic volumes of booze to affect a baby/foetus.

Why don’t you get a low alcohol or zero alcohol bottle of fizz if you’d like to hold something fizzy. That’s what I did when I was pregnant at Christmas or even some lemonadeXmas Smile but one champagne won’t hurt.

katienana · 24/12/2021 08:22

I did with ds2 think I was 21 weeks. These decisions are for you to make not your dh.

Littlewhiteballs · 24/12/2021 08:22

Oh God, yes! I was pregnant in Greece and women there regularly drink a small glass of dark beer during pregnancy to help your milk come in. No idea if it works but I didn't complain Grin

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/12/2021 08:22

Yes and tell your DH when he is pregnant he can caboose what he does with his body.

hivemindneeded · 24/12/2021 08:24

When I was pregnant my lovely doctor wrote out 'glass of champagne on Christmas Day' on her prescription pad and tore it off for me. I'll never forget that.

Bluntness100 · 24/12/2021 08:24

Yes, medically doctors say it’s fine, personally I never did, as I know it effectively goes to the baby and I’d no more feed a baby champagne than I would one in the womb.

Namechangedforspooky · 24/12/2021 08:24

Yes of course! I did with both my girls
It’s not up to your husband!

hivemindneeded · 24/12/2021 08:24

Sorry posted too soon. Meant to add. If a GP says it's OK, it's fine.

SW1amp · 24/12/2021 08:25

Yes of course you can!

French women won’t be agonising over whether to have some champagne!

On a more serious note, I had my 20 week scan on my birthday a few years ago
I was under the care of an amazing fetal medicine consultant who scanned me and spotted the date/my DOB
When the scan was done, she said that all was well and therefore that plus my birthday meant I should go and have a glass of champagne to celebrate

She wouldn’t have said that if there was any risk from drinking it

SirSamuelVimes · 24/12/2021 08:25

Yes, of course you can! Both my gp andy midwife told me the odd drink is perfectly fine.

If you want to read something that helps lay out the reality of the risks involved in pregnancy, the book Expecting Better is very good. Maybe get it for your DH for Xmas!

accidentlygothereagain · 24/12/2021 08:27

One glass has no harm , go for it !

If you want bubbles for the rest of the day, M&S was the best alcohol free Prosecco I found when pregnant! X

zafferana · 24/12/2021 08:27

I had a glass of champagne on Christmas Day when I was 20 weeks pregnant with DS2. One glass isn't going to do any harm.

Yes!!

Expecting Better is an excellent book

MaidenoftheSpear · 24/12/2021 08:32

Go for it! One small glass won't be an issue, FAS is normally the result of the mother really going for it booze-wise during pregnancy.
When your husband is pregnant he can be in charge of what goes into his body, you be in charge of yours.
Cheers!

sofato5miles · 24/12/2021 08:32

Of course you can, cheers!

Dozer · 24/12/2021 08:34

Why are you asking the internet what you ‘can’ do? The health information is easily available and you can make your own choice.

Not your H’s business!

GoodnightGrandma · 24/12/2021 08:35

Yes you can, I had the very occasional small glass of wine when I fancied it, and I was over the morning sickness.

user159 · 24/12/2021 08:36

Yes! I was 35 weeks at Xmas the year I was pregnant and just had the one delicious glass! Enjoy!

ivfbabymomma1 · 24/12/2021 08:38

I did! Not on Xmas day as I was 8 weeks pregnant and felt so ill but I did later on, on my birthday!

Fallible · 24/12/2021 08:38

I had a small glass of champagne on Christmas Day, and one on my birthday with each of my pregnancies. Those were the only occasions I had any alcohol (planned pregnancies so none before finding out either).

Obviously safest is no alcohol ever but I was happy with my own risk assessment.

UrsulaBursula · 24/12/2021 08:40

Of course!
I would
