Recommended books, DVDs, CDs for taking care of yourself in pg & preparing for birth?

I'm anxious that I'm going to end up moving house while PG (great! Oh just peachy) and it might restrict the kind of ante-natal classes I can get into. I've got NO experience with babies or PG, am the first of my close friends to get PG, and am generally a touch anxious.

Ideally, can anyone recommend a really brilliant CD or DVD to help me with the things ante-natal classes might cover, like breathing and birth techniques and all that sort of thing? Books are good too, but I am more likely to get to a bookshop and have a flick through myself, whereas CDs and DVDs are harder to "try-before-you-buy" as it were.

Dr Yehudi Gordan's book "Birth and Beyond" - it is quite a big book, but I found it invaluable. He is an obstetrician at a London Hospital and his book is full of useful information written in a clear and concise way - highly recommended. Can't help with the DVD's- sorry.

i ended up doing that too, moved from London to Scotland!!i managed to have the majority of my classes in London and none in scotland. try and find out where your nearest antenatal classes are and then just book in before you move.
not too sure about dvd's etc but i have two fab books which have been my bibles throughout pregnancy, and also saved me ringing friends every five minutes!

  1. what to expect, when your expecting.
  2. what to expect, in the first year. both are written by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway. They answer any worry and question you might have. All the best, and good luck with everything!

I found "blooming birth" by Lucy Atkins and Julia Guderian to be excellent. Don't know about DVDs though

Reading the baby whisperer which is really good. But I'm a first timer to who feels exactly like you so can't offer any practical advice other than you are 100 per cent normal feeling nervous - we all do. But remember a lot of it will come instinctively too - that's what I keep telling myself anyway! Good luck!

Iwold urge every pregant woman to read Ina may gaskins' guide to childbirth. it is an excellent book to help you prepare for the birth and is centered on normalising childbirth and giving women faith in their bodies.

I love "what to expect when you are expecting". Am a first time mum too and this book has helped put my mind at ease.

Brill, thank you everyone! Will look all of those out when I am next in a bookshop. Thank you blondierow for the specific advice too - it's good to know someone else has been there and managed fine!

Cheers!

I'd also recommend "What to expect: The first year" as well, as once the baby comes you'll have an awful lot less time for reading!
