Hi all, can anyone help me as to what this could mean for me.

After a scan today to check the growth of baby as its been showing small, the doctor has said that there is a notch in my left uterine artery. This was spotted by another doctor when i went in one night 3 weeks ago after lack of movement, but when checked by the doctor ive seen today a couple of days later he didnt see it.

Now he has, and has booked me for another scan next thursday, as baby is also still showing small and has only gained 12oz in 3 weeks.

Unfortunatly he didnt explain what this may mean so can anyone shed any light on this for me????????

Oh, Dids, I'm sorry nobody answered...I'm afraid I don't know what it means, but will bump this for you in case someone is about.

Really quiet isn't it, do you think people are all in town doing their shopping?

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 20/12/2007 15:08

Btw how far along are you?

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 20/12/2007 15:10

This seems to be saying that there is a slightly increased risk of Hypertension, or high blood pressure, in women with this happening. Still trying to figure out what could cause it.
Oh and increased risk of pre eclampsia.
Don't stress it yet, it isn't definite.

dids - I don't know anything about the notch but if they thought it was anything major they would have you in sooner than a weeks time, especially as you are officially 'term' tomorrow.

My dd had IUGR and we were scanned v. regularly and at 37 weeks where there was an issue with the scan I was kept in and had to deliver.

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 20/12/2007 17:11

Yes the fact you're 37 weeks is reassuring. It may be that infant has grown slightly less than he/she would have done otherwise, but as Wheelybug says, if it were a big cause for worry you would still be in hospital.
Hope it all goes well, tell us what they say when you see them

didsnbump · 20/12/2007 17:24

Yeah i know that if it was major they would have kept me in, but i have lost faith in him as he didnt spot it 3 weeks ago when another doctor had a few nights before.

Are they many complications from IUGR??

Fair enough and anyway - its understandable you are worried.

No complications with IUGR - I had to deliver dd at 37 weeks (failed induction followed by c-sec) and she was born weighing 4 lbs 9 oz. She spent a couple of hours in SCBU being heated to get her blood sugar levels up but then after that she was with me and thrived from that moment. She wouldn't/couldn't breastfeed but I don't know if that was anything to do with IUGR.

She will be 3 in January and is average height, still skinnyish (but I think that has more to do with the fact she has inherited dh's build rather than my heffalumpness !) and has reached all the developmental milestones at the right time. She is also exceedingly robust and healthy !

Good luck !
