Lifted something heavy. Reassure me?

So I have a cooker that was just put outside today by work men that im giving away, but of course it starts raining. My uncle (not knowing I'm pregnant) and I lifted it just inside my front door and I like an idiot took the bottom heavy end. I feel a bit achy now, nothing bad, just aware I'm perhaps should've not lifted it 😅 I lost a baby in October so this is my rainbow. I'm 6 weeks, do you think I'll be alright?

No-one can say you'll be okay or not. But I don't believe that lift will change the chances of keeping your baby personally. Best of luck.

Diditopknot · 22/12/2021 20:34

The lifting thing is more to do with relaxed, softened ligaments of the back and pelvis leading to increased risk of back injury rather than risk to the baby.
Someone might be along who is more knowledgeable but as I recall that’s the reason to be cautious when lifting.
Hope this reassured you.

MissNothing1991 · 22/12/2021 20:39

I know how you feel. I moved into an upstairs flat when I was about the same (found out I was pregnant next day!) and was lifting fridges and everything upstairs with my dad.

If it gives you any comfort, I now have a very happy 2.5 year old, but i did feel awful at the time!

Footballschmootball · 22/12/2021 20:39

Hopefully all fine :) agree with pp that it’s risk to you that they’re worried about. If it makes you feel better I lifted a banquet table (genuinely , it’s absolutely massive and seats about 12) for some insane reason when I was about 6 weeks. I decided I wanted to rearrange a room so obviously impatiently cracked on and did it on my own before realising I probably shouldn’t. All was fine apart from my anxiety levels when I realised what I’d done!

Eightandahalfyears · 22/12/2021 20:40

Lifting things has nothing to do with losing a baby, it’s does to the softening of your ligaments that can then cause damage to your back.

toastfiend · 22/12/2021 20:42

I was deadlifting 100kg at about that stage of pregnancy, before I found out I was pregnant. Actually, it was a contributory factor to why I tested as I found it harder and was more breathless than usual when working out. Nothing bad happened. I had a crap pregnancy, but it was nothing to do with the weights.

As a PP said, my understanding is that the advice not to lift weights is due to the ligaments loosening and relaxing as your pregnancy progresses, which means you're more likely to sustain an injury to yourself.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 22/12/2021 20:50

A dozen people will pile on here in a moment to tell you they are pregnant with a 2yo who weighs about 30kg who has to be hefted onto a changing table, into car seats etc etc.

Lifting is normal, it's to do with the risk to your back. If you slip a disc or whatever you will have difficulty moving around and that can cause other issues. Sounds like you haven't done any damage. I'd do some gentle stretching before you go to bed

Stade197 · 22/12/2021 20:58

I was working a manual job with lots of heavy lifting whilst pregnant and didn't do any damage (stopped and went onto light duties when i found out i was pregnant)

jokerflowers · 22/12/2021 21:14

Thank you all! Actually has made me feel a bit better, it wasn't until after when I felt it in my back I was like oh, what have I just done 🤦🏾‍♀️ I had heard that it was more about risk to mum than baby but obviously did the only smart thing to do in this situation and google it which wasn't very reassuring 😅 gunna have a bath and relax and hopefully calm my anxieties!

At six weeks they are tucked away and very safe.

Yep. Here I am! I'm 14 weeks but still lifting my nearly 3yo when needed. Baby is so tiny and well protected at 5 weeks that you won't have done any damage, and any damage would be in terms of your back and pain, not anything to do with baby!
Fallagain · 22/12/2021 21:29

Your baby won’t be effected by lifting anything. As your pregnancy develops your ligament become softer to allow your pelvis the space to allow the baby out. The danger with lift is you may cause damage to you joints and muscles because your ligaments aren’t as strong.

dg93 · 22/12/2021 21:46

I was lifting 25kg containers at work up until I was 11 weeks pregnant as I couldn't tell my colleagues that I couldn't lift them anymore...... 31 weeks pregnant now 😊 you should be fine x

GinnyBee · 22/12/2021 21:51

Many women continue weight training all through pregnancy. As long as it's done safely it's absolutely fine. The risk, as has been pointed out, is not with the baby but with your own safety due to hormones relaxing joints and muscles, and centre of balance shifting.

Keeping active and exercising is really beneficial for pregnancy and good fitness contributes to fewer issues and niggles during pregnancy, and faster recovery after.

jokerflowers · 22/12/2021 22:05

I wanna do yoga but even that I've read don't start until 2nd trimester if you weren't doing it pre pregnancy 😭 so I get worried about stretching and lifting and that, I'm sure everything is okay as you say. I also have older children who I try not to lift but sometimes have to, sooner I get to my 12 week scan and hear everything is okay the better!

Mammyloveswine · 22/12/2021 22:08

I'm sure you'll be fine! With my second I had a very chunky toddler clambering all over and needing lifting up all the time!

GinnyBee · 23/12/2021 10:25

When you think about it, the opportunity to take it easy and not lift things or do much physical activity is fairly recent in human history. Women have been having babies for thousands of years without the opportunity to avoid physical work. You're pregnant, not injured or disabled :) Carrying on with normal life, which sometimes involves lifting things or exerting yourself physically, is not an issue!

MrsTimRiggins · 23/12/2021 10:34

You’ll be fine, please try not to worry (just watch out for over straining your back in the future if you’re unused to lifting heavy items!)
As a farmer, in and out of tractors, heaving bales, feed sacks, mucking out my horses etc, I was fairly hard on my body but my six week old currently snoozing on my chest says it was fine Wink
Congratulations, it’s such an exciting time Flowers

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 23/12/2021 16:00

Baby will be fine just be careful with your back in future. During my second pregnancy I got a slipped disc from lifting my 1 year old and it caused me no end of problems for 2 years after and I needed surgery to fix it. Not saying that to scare you but you are more prone to injury when pregnant so just take it easy with the lifting.

randomsabreuse · 23/12/2021 16:03

More likely to damage you is the reason for the advice. I pulled a muscle in my ribs carpet cleaning while pregnant and it still niggles 6 years later -both kids seemed to love poking it with their feet!
