As we're talking of foods to avoid, whats the deal with coleslaw?

Okay, having just read the pate thread I had a quick google on it and found a few pages which say don't eat coleslaw. I have been eating loads this pregnancy and didn't realise that it could be a problem. Has anyone any idea why it's an issue? I have been checking for those with pasteurised eggs, but it seems to be more than this which is a problem. Any thoughts?

I have no idea but I ate lots of coleslaw when pregnant. Could be the risk of listeria?

it could mean the prepared sort you get in a deli counter - I think salad bars in general are bad news

Not sure but isn't it something to do with the mayonnaise? Or is that just homemade (i.e. raw egg)??

It's just homemade stuff (cos of mayonnaise I think) and I wouldn't risk salad bars, restaurants etc. Shop bought stuff should be OK (I'm eating it anyway)

Ok, so I'm confused (happens easily I admit!) Does that mean that all coleslaw should be avoided, or is the sealed shop bought variety ok?

I think you have to take this with a certain amount of scepticism - I presume pregnant women are no more likely to get listeria than other people - just that if they do get it the effects can be more serious?

I think the chances of getting listeria from a tub of coleslaw are pretty minimal. The fact does remain that almost all shop bought coleslaw is repulsive with a dressing reminiscent of vinegary saliva

Agree with Fio, homemade coleslaw is dead easy and soooo much nicer than the vinegary stuff you buy in the shops. Just get hold of a julienne peeler like this one to do your carrots and you can knock some up in five minutes.

Ok, while I'd admit that shop bought colelsaw is not to everyone's taste, I still want it. Sorry.

I was told all open salads were no go but a sealed packet of coleslaw would be fine.

I always make though as I hate them with mayo. Red cabbage, beetroot, apple and carrot is delicious with olive oil and vinegar and a little caraway if you like it.

at that link - is that new advice? I had no idea about potato salad, or non-meat pate.

The cheese advice always makes me so sad. 'Avoid nice cheese, though dull cheese is fine'.

If you really want it I'm sure it's fine. You're allowed yoghurt and pasteurised mayo so a sealed pot of veg mixed with mayo is no different.
