Hi all. I’m panicking, 20 weeks pregnant and for the last few days had a tickly throat. Took 3 strepsils (over 3 days) and 1 Sudafed max tablet this morning for a blocked synus. I’m just reading now these aren’t suppose to be taken in pregnancy. I’m trying to not worry as it hasn’t been excessive, surely baby will be ok? All LFT are negative.
What else could I take for tickly cough? Or are strepsils ok? So confusing.
Thank you xxx

You can’t only really take paracetamol. If you need anything go by else ask your midwife. They will likely say no though. Don’t worry about what you’ve already taken, just don’t take any more without medical advice x

For a tickly cough honey or honey and lemon drink is as effective as many medications.

If you need more than that talk to the pharmacist.

Thank you @JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon @Onehotmessiah I’m so so worried now about the Sudafed tablet I took this morning. Only one, I’m really hoping it won’t harm the baby. I’ve done so well up untill now with everything with food and drink etc. Feel so stupid for not thinking about this!!

@DeeDee20 easy done. I’m sure one tablet will be ok - just no more now.

Boiling water with natural Honey and a slice of lemon in it home made is best + 1g paracetamol 4hrly - max 4g in 24hrs. One reminder re the drink is make sure your oral hygiene is good after the drinks as obviously they can cause dental problems in excess and even more so in pregnancy.

Can use vicks chest rubs for decongestant and anatomicals forehead rub for headaches (I swear by these!).

Rest, warm baths, hope you’re feeling better soon! XxFlowers

@DeeDee20 .... do. Not. Worry.

Probably useless for me to say but healthy babies are born all the time to people who do horrifically unhealthy things.

Hope you feel better soon x

It's almost impossible to test products on pregnant women (you can't exactly give pregnant women something then see if it harms them or their babies).

This means there's never evidence that something is safe, which doesn't mean it's necessarily dangerous. There are lots of things like this that are probably fine, especially in small amounts, but the company doesn't want to be sued.

So don't assume just because something says it's not safe for pregnant women, that doesn't mean it's poisonous either! Just no evidence to demonstrate safety.

Sage tea is good for throats. Plus lemon, ginger and honey. Get well soon!

Lateral flow tests are for people with no symptoms.

You need to book a PCR test.
Hope you're feeling better soon x

thank you all so much @EnidFrighten @SouthwestSis @RainbowTime @sleepyshiftworker. I went to boots pharmacy today and she said defo no to sudafed, I got so upset but like you’re all saying - try not to worry now. Thanks for the advice re. Other remedies and PCR has been ordered. I sincerely hope that one tablet has done nothing, have been so careful these last 5 months. Just feel like an idiot and let myself/baby down xxx

Argh please don't go to boots pharmacy :( or anywhere else.
You should be self isolating whilst waiting to have your PCR done since you have symptoms that could be covid.

sleepyshiftworker · 20/12/2021 17:11

@DeeDee20 I promise you - if you've spent any time in a big city in the last few months you've probably inhaled more chemicals in air pollution than in that one tablet.

Take the slack off. You're doing grand. The fact you even worry and notice this stuff is a brill start but don't be too hard on yourself.
