Deep heat during pregnancy?

I'm 15 weeks pregnant and suffering with lower back pain, this has been ongoing on and of for a few years, but the last few days it has been playing up

I've been taking paracetamol, but I would rather not take to many, I've so been using a hot water bottle, but it's just making me hot and sweat at the moment!!

NHS website does not recommend using deep hear , but I've read a few posts on here saying it's OK to use , so I'm a bit confused!

Any advice would been appreciated

Going to contact doctors next week if no better

Am I right in thinking it has ibuprofen in it? If so, I wouldn't use (I'm currently 18 weeks)

Sunshine2019xx · 17/12/2021 11:36

@northernlola yes it does, which is why I also assumed you could not use it, until i read posts online , some even saying their doctors advised using it 🤷‍♀️ so it's really conflicting information!

I thought it was a no, the anti inflammatories can affect blood to baby’s heart?

I used it on my legs all the time during pregnancy Confused no bad side effects that I know of. Reading the leaflet for the roller one I have it says consult your doctor if pregnant rather than do not use.

Unicornflakegirl · 17/12/2021 12:38

If you have checked and the NHS says not to use it, and some mumsnetters tell you they have used it with no issues, which will you go with?

It might just be that there's not enough evidence but if they actually advise against it my personal preference would be to follow the advice.

Bells3032 · 17/12/2021 12:42

it very clearly says no. I'd buy a hot waterbottle or disposable instant heat packs to put on the area. That should help

DropYourSword · 17/12/2021 12:42

Not sure if you can get it there but fisiocrem is safe to use in pregnancy and is a similar product (but with a bit less punch)

Teaandcrumpets95 · 17/12/2021 13:08

I really wouldn't use it as it's not advised, I'd stick to the water bottle, maybe try a wheat heat back or a warm bath x

It’s not a case of not enough evidence. You might be fine but the risks are clear. I wanted to use voltarin for a sore shoulder /back earlier in pregnancy but couldn’t, I had heat packs draped over my shoulder for weeks.

Heavily pregnant me now wants to go get a can of deep heat just to smell it Grin total derail, sorry OP 😂

TashieWoo · 18/12/2021 07:54

My shoulder was very sore a few weeks ago (I’m now 20 weeks), I have had ongoing problems with it since breaking my collarbone but it got a lot worse and stopped me from sleeping etc. I bought a pregnancy pillow (a Grandma Shark one following recommendations on here) and it has helped immeasurably. I also got a lavender heat bag from Amazon that works well. Also, a pregnancy support belt / bump band might be a good idea? There are lots of other things you can try, but as PP have said Deep Heat isn’t a good idea, I read the same.

If the NHS says no, then it's a no, surely? Posts online can be made by any randomer, getting their info from anywhere. NHS advice is backed up by actual data.

GrowBabyGrow · 18/12/2021 12:03

I wonder if some of the posts about deep heat being ok actually mean the herbal one which doesn't have ibuprofen in it. Confusing when they are called the same thing! I used the herbal one before getting pregnant but some of the essential oils in the herbal one aren't recommended in pregnancy so I've stopped and just use a wheat bag that I heat in the microwave.
