Covid booster during 3rd trimester

Hi all,

I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant and I was apprehensive of taking the covid jabs (dose 1 & 2) during pregnancy but in the end I decided to have them and just hope for the best pregnancy wise. I had both very early in the pregnancy, something like week 3 and week 12.

I was planning on taking my booster jab after birth because the advice was to wait 6 months after taking the 2nd dose....which was close to my due date anyway, so I though I'd just take it after giving birth, rather than risk injecting stuff into my body especially when I'm so close to the end. But now with the new variant they're urging everyone to take it asap and the guidance has now changed to "you can take your booster 2 months after you've had your 2nd dose".

I'm leaning towards taking it, as my midwife said the NHS are encouraging pregnant women to take it, and also because the booster is made up of the same substances as the 1st and 2nd jabs, which gives me a little bit of reassurance.

I just wanted to ask if there are any other pregnant ladies who have had their booster in the 3rd trimester AND with a less than 6 month gap since their 2nd jab? Just hearing from you would give me that extra bit of support I guess :)

Hi @AR23

I'll be following this thread hopefully some people who already had boosters in a shorter than 6-month timeframe will respond

I am 31 weeks on Saturday and have booked in on that day for a Pfizer booster shot exactly 3 months since my second dose.

It's scary but I feel it's the best thing I can do for myself and my baby.

I have two kids in primary school, and I'm booked for a c-section 14th of February,
Vaccine efficacy from the 2 doses will be significantly lower by the time I give birth not to mention the risk from the new variant.

Had Moderna booster Tuesday, almost exactly 3 months after my 2nd Pfizer and I’m 36 weeks pregnant.
No side effects except for a sore arm.

I had my booster at 31 weeks which was 6months post dose 2 (am a healthcare worker so my first 2 jabs were quite early) but that was a few weeks ago before all the concern with Omicron.

Knowing what we know now (and if it had been available to me) I would definitely have taken my booster sooner, I would definitely book one if you are approaching 3 months post jab 2.

Remember the vaccine itself doesn't leave your arm, the contents are not harmful but don't even leave your arm muscle regardless, they just help prepare your immune system. The vaccine (including the booster) are safe at any gestation, and it's especially important to get good protection for your 3rd trimester.

Hi op, sounds very similar to me. I’m 32 weeks and had my booster on Monday.
I also had my first two jabs in the first trimester so I’ve had the booster less than 6 months since the second. I had Pfizer for the first 2 and moderna on Monday. I feel completely fine, just a bit of a sore arm which has faded now. I was so relieved to get the booster. X

Hello, I had mine last weekend at 30 weeks (5 months since 2nd jab). I felt a little ropey for a few days but not too bad.

jolota · 16/12/2021 12:45

I'm due February but want the extra protection over Christmas as I'll be seeing more people than usual obviously.
I felt more worried that protection would have waned a bit since it's been a while since my last jab & would rather have a top up now than wait.
Will be having my booster at 31 weeks after about 5 months since my second jab.

Remember that all covid jabs including boosters take a couple of weeks to actually translate into improved immunity, they don't work at 100% from the day you have the jab,

so you need to keep taking usual precautions and not feel falsley reassured the day you have the jab. Just something else to consider when planning the timings

mumofmunchkin · 16/12/2021 12:53

I'm off to get mine this afternoon - nearly 29 week pregnant, and 5 months since my 2nd jab. I'm really happy to be having it with cases going as crazy as they are, and with kids in primary school and nursery and my husband working in a secondary school isolating at home isn't an option for me.

FreshBananasEverywhere · 16/12/2021 12:57

I had my booster 4months after my 2nd dose, and have had all three during pregnancy. I did feel rough after the booster because I had a cold and was a bit run down anyway (3rd trimester exhaustion plus other DC to look after) but I’m so relieved I did it, given how many people I know who are now catching Covid.

Onehotmess · 16/12/2021 12:58

I had it booked but had to cancel as I have COVID. Have the booster, trust me you don’t want COVID when pregnant. It’s not nice (and I’ve got off lightly) x

Thank you everyone! I went for the booster, just had it today at 31 +5 weeks. I had Pfizer for both 1st and 2nd doses, but my booster was Moderna, but a couple of people here on this thread have mentioned that their booster was different to the 1st/2nd doses. I was also reassured that this difference doesn't impact immunity as they're both (Pfizer and Moderna) made up of the same composition and safe to have a mix over.

Well done on having your booster! I’m having mine this afternoon at 25w6d, 4 months after my second dose. Was due booster in Feb, and baby in March, so feel happy to have my booster a bit early!
