Progesterone pessary - help!

Hi everyone,

I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant and have been spotting and cramping the last few days. I had a trip to EPU this morning where they found a heartbeat but found no explanation for the bleeding or pain. Due to previous loses, they've now prescribed progesterone pessaries for the next 10 days. I inserted one this morning and after going for a wee just now there are lots of pink tinged 'bits' floating in the loo. I'm just wondering if this is normal? Can anyone with experience of these help put my mind at rest please?!

Thanks x

Hi Beth262, the capsule dissolves inside you and the progesterone will be absorbed. Small bits may come out when you go to the toilet or you may see bits and discharge in your knickers (always wear a panty liner!). I was told that enough progesterone will still be absorbed. I insert one capsule in the morning and one at night. At night is great because I do it just before I go to sleep, and I assume being horizontal for 7 hours keeps more of it inside!! In the morning I try to do it as early as possible and sit/lie down for a bit afterwards, this obviously isn't always possible.

I also try to insert it as far up as possible, I actually try to find the cervix with my finger and tuck it behind that.....I feel like it's nice and snug up there!! Grin

Forgot to add, if you are bleeding slightly then that's why the bits will be tinged pink, normally they're just white.

It depends what type of pessary you are using, I used utrogestan and cyclogest but I only ever used cyclogest as a suppository so can’t really comment. Utrogestan definitely lead to a kind of greasy/chalky mess that went everywhere though, so my guess would be that it’s completely normal and nothing to worry about! I used to try to lay down for 15 minutes after putting one in to help it absorb before I lost it all, but I suspect that was pointless!

I was on progesterone pessaries from 6 weeks until 16 weeks. Twice daily. I would advise putting them the back entrance way rather than the front entrance. Especially if you're bleeding it could irritate it more

What @rainbowbaby5 said. If it's cyclogest, try them the other way. a lot less messy and doesn't irritate your cervix.

I'm on my last week of these "bum bullets" having been on them for the last 13 weeks! Good riddance!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

It is cyclogest, so I will try the 'other way' as you suggest @rainbowbaby5 and @Journeylikenomother though I'll be honest, the thought of it frightens me a bit! 😬😆 x

@Beth262 trust me I felt the exact same, but in the long run it's so much better. Less messy, less hassle, don't have to lay down for 30 minutes and all that jazz. Does make you constipated so just beware of that. But this pregnancy has made me constipated regardless, so it's the new norm😂

rainbowbaby5 · 15/12/2021 18:26

@JustWonderingIfYou the last week joy🙌🏼 you'll feel like a new woman not have that in your routine. Congratulations🥰

Journeylikenomother · 15/12/2021 18:39

I can't believe I'm saying this but ...you quickly get used to it 🙈

Beth262 · 15/12/2021 18:47

Thanks both.

Not wanting to sound reaaaaaly weird but, um, any tips? 🙈 I'm so sorry to ask!
