Why do people lie about their due date?

Can anyone explain this to me? Whenever someone is pregnant (largely DPs family, as no many on my side) there's always discrepancies with due dates- as in, clear lying about when baby is due.

I completely understand being vague 'due in May/End of the year' etc but why do people feel the need to be specific but then lie about it?

Someone in DPs family mentioned their
pregnancy very early on to DP and said due date is XYZ but seems to have forgotten this conversation and now, 4 weeks out, is telling everyone including DP that due date is 6/8 weeks out depending on the week! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ The only reason we've picked up on the discrepancy is that the actual/original date mentioned was a significant date and memorable.

Can anyone shed some light on possible reasonable reasons for doing this?

@FTEngineerM

BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE ANNOYING AS FUCK WHEN YOURE FULL TERM PREGNANT
😂 I'm ashamed that I LOL'd at this because I totally get it (7 weeks PP), but it's absolutely just this.

Or possibly someone I know who 'didn't realise dates were that important' until she had her booking convo with the midwife...

I can't say I've met anyone that's purposely lied but with my first pregnancy we had 3 early scans before our official NHS dating scan - I got given a different due date at all scans. Babies are so small at that age it's a guess based on measurements and can change.

Also, until you've had your Dating scan, they use your last period. If they've told your partner when they were early it's possible they were using this date. I'm currently pregnant with my second and my periods are irregular - going by my last period I would be due mid June. I had a private scan recently and I'm not as far on as that, I've been given an estimated due date of end of July. I'm fully expecting that will change again at my NHS scan next week

I tried telling people "late January" but they still asked for an exact date.

I have a planned C-section and the only one who knows the date is DH.

People are already saying my baby might come on Christmas Day 🙄
