Covid jab in pregnancy

Hi all,

I'm currently waiting for my booster. Got my second vaccine (Moderna) back in August and fell pregnant in October.

Anyone have any experience with the vaccine? Anyone nervous about having it? I've been told by my midwife to have it but doesn't seem to be a lot out there...?

I’ve booked my booster for January, I’ll be 12 weeks

Don't be scared @shannonl26, it's absolutely the best thing you could do at this moment for yourself and your baby.
Just bear in mind that it takes a few weeks for your immunity to even start building after your first jab, so you'll need to keep being careful about where you're going and who you are mixing with until the new year at least.

For anyone struggling to get an appointment, check if your antenatal clinic in hospital is offering it. Mine is on a walk-in basis for pregnant women when the clinics are in session.

@tryingtotest89 - I had my booster at 14 weeks and the side effects were the most mild of the three jabs, none this time. The Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists recommends pregnant women get vaccinated and the summary can be found here: www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/coronavirus-covid-19-pregnancy-and-womens-health/covid-19-vaccines-and-pregnancy/covid-19-vaccines-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding/

Moderna here - 1st in fertile week 2nd at 10 weeks pregnant and have just booked my booster in for later in the week (been pretty lucky in that respect, lots of friends struggling to get a slot). Scans and tests all fine and they're happy with baby's progress. I'm far more worried about the implications of catching it than anything else.

I managed to book online yesterday. Could do next day onwards, but I’ve booked for Friday afternoon. Feel very relieved to be triple jabbed by the end of the week!

Firsttimetrier · 14/12/2021 11:18

Did anyone get theirs in the first trimester?

My GP is awful as I can’t get passed the receptionist to even ask them and the midwife hotline just said lots of women wait until 12 weeks but there’s no advice to wait, but understandable to wait as the first 12 weeks is a fragile time.

I’m very much pro vaccine and got my two straight away but the lack of a clear answer is making me nervous and tempted to wait until I’m 12 weeks as that’s only 5 weeks away…

Has anyone had AZ as their initial jabs and then Moderna/Pfizer as the booster? Any ill effects? I had my second jab in May, got pregnant about 2 weeks later and am due for my booster tomorrow, having already had Covid in August. I'm 30 weeks.

MissBPotter · 14/12/2021 11:26

It’s scarier getting Covid in your third tri and getting seriously ill. I had both jabs in pregnancy and baby was born perfectly healthy on her due date and end of aug. She’s now doing beautifully and is big and healthy. Please protect yourselves and your babies.

They had a bit about the jabs for pregnant women on women’s hour on radio 4 today if anyone fancies a listen.

I didn’t realise one of the reasons there are more pre-term births for covid+ women are because they need to turn you in your front to help your lungs if you get it badly so have to deliver the baby early to allow them to do that! Scary stuff, glad my booster is booked!

@Firsttimetrier I had my second dose at 6 weeks pregnant. I am currently almost 26 weeks pregnant and everything has been great - baby perfectly healthy and pregnancy straightforward.

Having my booster on Friday. I’ve also had flu vaccine and whooping cough vaccine at 20 weeks

Jericha · 14/12/2021 13:24

@Firsttimetrier I had my booster which was Moderna last week at six weeks pregnant. I told the Marshall and they put me in a room where it was a doctor doing the jab and he recommend to have it which put my mind at ease. I did also read the link in this thread for advice for pregnant women which is why I booked it.

Suzi888 · 14/12/2021 13:27

Not pregnant but going back five years when I was pregnant I had the worst cough in the world and it lasted forever. Day and night, so bad I was vomiting and sore in the end.
I would have a vaccine, over that cough any day. I always get my flu vaccines now. All personal choice of course.

Onehotmess · 14/12/2021 13:30

I’ve had 2 jabs (14 weeks and 26 weeks ish) I’m now 35 weeks and have caught Covid but no symptoms. I’ve had to cancel my booster as I have to wait 28 days after testing positive. I’m all for the jab and I’m sure it’s why I’m not I’ll with it, which wouldn’t be great at 35 weeks! X

Holskey · 14/12/2021 18:11

I did a quick Google since someone on this thread said that Pfizer may be safer than Moderna. I found Germany only give Pfizer (not Moderna) to pregnant women. This is the kind of thing that makes me hesitate - that and the change of plan on astra zeneca (of which I had 2 doses when I was not pregnant and less cautious).

shannonl26 · 15/12/2021 11:46

Just thought I’d update & say I went for my 1st dose of pfizer yesterday, no side effects at all just a dead arm as expected. I’m 22 weeks & 5 days.

I was honestly petrified of getting this jab, I have a general fear of needles anyway but also suffer with anxiety that’s gotten worse since pregnancy. The nurses were so reassuring & they honestly go through EVERYTHING with you before getting straight to the jab, they are extremely caring & kind.

Baby is also her usual self kicking away. I’ve actually noticed her more (not sure if that’s my anxiety paying extra attention) so she’s definitely letting me know she’s ok.
