How careful are you with sugar during pregnancy?

Just wondered how careful everyone else is? I've read that you shouldn't have more than 30 grams of "free sugars" during pregnancy as it has a detrimental effect on the baby's developing brain. In the mornings I have a glass of orange juice with my breakfast and that's got 22 grams alone... I don't really eat much if any sweets, but when I do I feel bad as it's impossible to stay under 30 grams. More like double that if I have a treat.

Where did you read about this? There is a lot of bad information about pregnancy on the web, although excess sugar at anytime is unlikely to be beneficial.
Stick to the NHS website for evidence based pregnancy advice

I follow the NHS guidance on foods to avoid, and other than that just aim to have a generally healthy diet. I don’t count free sugars, or anything else.

I ate shed loads of sugar. Really bad sweet tooth in pregnancy. Put on four stone! Baby has been ahead at several milestones. First of her group to talk saying mum & muma. Nothing wrong with her! 😂

Blxo94 · 12/12/2021 15:41

I was bad for eating crap... Then got diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 25 weeks. Now I have no choice but to watch Sugars and carbs. Don't stress enjoy your treats! I miss them 😭x

Blxo94 · 12/12/2021 15:41

Also should mention I was eating healthy meals. Just would snack on chocolate and crisps, cakes etc ha!

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 12/12/2021 16:14

Sounds like absolute rubbish to me. Your body starts digesting carbs from the moment you’re chewing them. It’s the amylase enzyme in your saliva. Try chewing some white bread for as long as you can - it gets sweet!
By the time it gets through your digestive system and to your baby it’s not going to matter whether the glucose/fructose whatever sugars were from quinoa or haribo.
Prob not a great idea if you’re susceptible to GD for insulin spiking etc but I wouldn’t worry otherwise.

I ate loads of sugar during both pregnancies and hardly ate any veg. My diet wasfruit and carbs. Grew good strong babies, no GD.

it has a detrimental effect on the baby's developing brain.

Where on earth did you read this? And how could it possibly be true?

Eating excessive amounts of sugar isn't great. However, it's in no way going to impact the baby.

Not at all. I’ve had a terrible sweet tooth in my pregnancy.

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 12/12/2021 16:23

I ate a lot of sugar during my pregnancy and it caused me so much health anxiety but my dc was healthy and never ill as a baby.

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 12/12/2021 16:26

Stop worrying so much op. Just try and eat a balanced diet. Having a glass of orange juice and something else sweet in the one day won’t be detrimental to you or baby as long as you’re getting everything else you need in your diet.

StruggleStreet · 12/12/2021 16:26

I ate an absolutely ridiculous amount of sugar during my pregnancy. I gained a lot of weight but DS seems fine.

BertieBotts · 12/12/2021 16:28

Not at all.

soughsigh · 12/12/2021 16:59

I ate a shocking amount of chocolate (I was sure I was going to get gestational diabetes) and DS is far too clever for his own good.

Eating a balanced diet is recommended, but don't stress too much about it.

MiracleBaby2022 · 15/12/2021 12:30

Oh no - apologies to everyone who read my message as if I'm worrying and being really anxious about this. In fact I'm not worried at all. It was just a random thought that popped into my head. I eat a super healthy diet and just trying to stay off the free sugars anyway!

Glad to hear no one's had any issues 👍🏼
